IT Infrastructure Engineering Intern
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
This position provides an excellent opportunity for Florida Poly students to gain valuable professional experience with the University IT Infrastructure team that complements their educational programs and degree goals.
If desired, this professional experience can fulfill the University’s Professional Internship Experience requirement.
In this role, the student will support both ongoing projects and daily operations while collaborating directly with IT engineers. The opportunity will encompass various aspects of IT infrastructure operations and support within the University’s ITS division, working side by side with ITS professionals as valued members of the project team and operational workgroups.
This position will work on highly technical assignments that demand a rapid understanding of complex concepts. Therefore, strong technical skills and a comprehensive grasp of a wide array of technical concepts are essential. Ideal candidates should be eager to learn new things, capable of quickly assimilating complex information, recognize the implications of their work, and knowing when to seek assistance from senior engineers.
JOB DESCRIPTION
RESPONSIBILITIES
Systems:
- Monitor IT Infrastructure to ensure reliability, availability, and scalability.
- Perform routine tasks with the telephony system.
- Assist with management of Linux and/or Windows servers.
Network:
- Perform switch configuration changes such as configuring access ports with proper VLANs or enabling a switchport.
- Replace hardware/equipment such as access points, phones, switches, battery backups, PDU’s, or cameras.
- Run and terminate low-voltage cabling in buildings.
- Trace and patch in network drops as needed.
Security:
- Configure system baselines and reports with security.
- Create dashboards and reports defining
- Maintain and improve the security posture of network systems, promptly addressing issues, vulnerabilities, and security requirements in alignment with regulatory guidelines (PCI, CIS, NIST).
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:
- Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for use by operations, support teams, and end users.
- Update or create diagrams of infrastructure systems including traffic flow, rack diagrams, building infrastructure location maps, and physical and logical network diagrams.
- Share knowledge and best practices with fellow team members to foster a collaborative learning environment.
Routine Tasks:
- Triage, troubleshoot, and resolve escalated tickets.
- Organize supplies and work areas and receive on purchases.
- Perform routine maintenance on IT Infrastructure equipment such as the golf carts (charging, washing, inflating tires, etc.).
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA)
- Fundamental/Basic Understanding:
- Understanding of cloud services including AWS and Microsoft Azure.
- Understanding of core components such as Windows Active Directory Domains, DHCP, and DNS
- Understanding of Windows Server, Linux server operating systems, and/or Kubernetes.
- Understanding of programming principles and knowledge of PowerShell or other scripting languages.
- Knowledge and experience in Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office, Adobe suite of products.
- Problem-Solving Skills:
- Ability to take ownership of an issue, troubleshoot the problem, and drive complete and well thought out resolutions.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and resolving complex problems in a timely and effective manner.
- Ability to quickly learn and understand complex tasks.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, stakeholders, and the public.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Students are required to maintain confidentiality regarding any sensitive information they encounter while working on specific systems and projects. This includes adhering to all university policies and guidelines related to data security and privacy.
Minimum Qualifications
- A student’s eligibility to work as a student employee is based on their enrollment status, the ability to legally work in the United States, and they must meet the following eligibility criteria.
- Current students must:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher.
- Have successfully completed nine credit hours or more in the most recent fall or spring semester with a GPA of 2.0 or better.
- Be enrolled at least half-time as an undergraduate or graduate student.
- New students must:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher.
