IT Area Lead Data Plane

As IT Area Lead – Data Plane, you will define the technical vision and lead the delivery of ING’s global data plane services across multiple platforms. This is a strategic and complex leadership role that requires strong technical insight, stakeholder management, and the ability to drive change across distributed teams. You will ensure that ING’s data foundation is secure, compliant, and future-ready, enabling advanced analytics, data management, and AI capabilities across the bank.

The team
As IT Area Lead for Data Plane, you will lead seven chapter leads in four countries, employing more than 60 engineers. Your leadership will shape ING’s data foundation for years to come, enabling advanced analytics, data management, and AI capabilities across the bank. You will be part of the Enterprise Data Foundation and Compliance management team, employing more than 170 professionals globally.

Enterprise Data Foundation and Compliance management is part of the Data & Analytics domain, which is part of ING Tech. It serves ING’s data and analytics needs, providing data plane, data compliance tooling, data products, transformation, AI, and BI solutions. We operate in a fun, creative environment with 350+ people across 6 countries, dedicated to excellence and innovation. All teams work in a tribe construct, delivering data and AI solutions in close collaboration with business stakeholders.


 

Roles and responsibilities
What you’ll do:

  • Set the technology vision and strategy for the Data Plane area, aligning with ING’s global data platform roadmap.

  • Lead engineering teams across multiple countries (Netherlands, Romania, Poland, and India), fostering craftsmanship and continuous improvement.

  • Manage end-to-end delivery of data plane capabilities, ensuring operational excellence, security, and compliance.

  • Drive financial accountability through FinOps practices, optimizing spend and forecasting.

  • Collaborate with architects and product leads to design scalable, future-proof solutions.

  • Shape and manage external service management contracts to ensure resilience and flexibility.

  • Ensure data plane services meet global regulatory standards (GDPR, BCBS 239) and internal risk frameworks.

  • Lead cultural and technical change, enabling teams to adopt modern engineering practices and tools.

  • Master’s degree in data, computer science, or information management related field.

  • 5+ years of IT leadership experience, preferably managing managers and distributed teams.

  • Strong background in data platforms (Oracle, Bigquery, Hadoop, Spark), cloud technologies (Google Cloud Platform, IAM, cloud storage), and analytics.

  • Experience in large-scale platform evolution and setting strategic vision.

  • Skilled in financial management of IT services (FinOps experience is a plus).

  • Excellent stakeholder management up to C-level.

  • Fluent in English and comfortable in an international context.
