Summary:
The International Student & Scholar Services Office at American University is seeking a friendly, organized, and reliable student to join our team as an ISSS Student Advisor. This role is essential in providing excellent customer service to international students and visitors, assisting with administrative tasks, and supporting the overall operations of the office. The ideal candidate will serve as the eyes and ears in detecting international student issues, anticipating problems, and proposing solutions. Our office is keen on seeking student perspectives to assist in enhancing the effectiveness of our services and ensuring they align with international student needs.
Essential Functions:
Greet and assist international students and visitors with general immigration, cultural, and adjustment inquiries in a professional and welcoming manner.
Answer phone calls, respond to emails, and manage the front desk area.
Provide information about campus resources, programs, and services available to international students.
Assist with the immigration document creation process through the evaluation of financial documents and updating sensitive student files in the office database (Sunapsis).
Support the preparation and distribution of informational materials and documents.
Help organize and participate in events and activities hosted by ISSS.
Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Part-time.
10 - 15 hours per week.
Salary Range:
$17.95 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
Currently enrolled as a student at American University.
Must have an active Federal Work Study (FWS) award.
Strong cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills.
Punctuality and time management skills.
Attention to detail.
Professional work ethic.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email management.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Previous customer service or administrative experience is a plus.
Multilingual skills are an advantage but not required.
Experience in F-1/J-1 immigration status preferred.
Proficiency in using Canva as a graphic design tool is a plus.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
This position has flexible hours, with a commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week and three days of physical presence in ISSS. Availability to work during office hours as the ISSS office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Immigration regulations limit employment eligibility for students on F-1 and J-1 visas. They can only work on campus for 20 hours/week while school is in session and more hours during school breaks.
