Job Summary: This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations. Term Appointment for two years, with a one-year extension, up to 3 years total.

Major Duties:

  • Duties for Investigator GS-1810-14 include but not limited to: Technical expert and advisor to Special Agents and Assistant Special Agents in Charge and OIG senior officials on matters related to oversight of programs connected to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Medicaid Fraud Control Units. Serves as a mentor to new management officials and senior agents by providing coaching support to newly selected junior and senior managers within OI. Utilizes previous investigative experience to provide insight and guidance to mentees. The incumbent assists in the obtaining, coordinating, and dissemination of information relative to the conduct of administrative investigations relating to fraud, waste, and abuse with HHS Programs. Representing the Special Agent in Charge and other senior OIG officials at conferences and meetings to give presentations on behalf of OI and participates in professional problem solving of highly complex investigations. Responsible for advising and making recommendations to senior OIG/OI staff regarding issues in litigation and implementation of administrative sanctions. Initiates discussions and/or meetings with key internal and external stakeholders to clarify or resolve concerns. Develops training materials and guidelines, make presentations at meetings and conferences for nationwide investigative staff and other agencies; perform community liaison functions as directed.

For the GS-14 applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate: Experience (1) Leading investigative initiatives and special projects that have a major impact within an organization (2) Mentoring others on conducting and reporting on investigations; and 3) Providing briefings and verbal reports on program areas or operations to senior officials. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.
