What will you do?
This internship entails deep material characterization and comparability assessments of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and excipients used in the formulation and manufacture of oral, semi-solid and liquid medicinal products.
Comparability studies are required to assess the impact of product lifecycle changes on material properties and secondary manufacturability (micronization, granulation, mixing, milling and tableting), drug product performance and patient impact.
The material characterization techniques involved in this project will encompass some or all of the following: particle sizing, solid state form determination, powder flow, thermal analysis, particle imaging, moisture sorption and rheological analysis.
In addition to Materials Science and lab work, you will also explore the use of digital technology and GenAI in improving Materials Science work processes and outcomes.
What will you learn?
Acquire hands on experience on different material characterization techniques for APIs and excipients used to manufacture medicinal products (particle sizing, XRPD, rheological properties, flow properties, moisture sorption analysis and thermal analysis)
Hands-on experience on equipment trouble-shooting and characterization method development (where required)
Data analysis and interpretation of results
Present results, participate in material science discussions and influence data-driven decision making
Appreciation of the importance of material characteristics on drug product manufacturing processes and quality
Acquire knowledge and application of good laboratory practices (GLP) and good documentation practices (GDP)
Explore the use of digital technology and GenAI tools in improving work processes and outcomes
