The Position

In Roche's Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) and Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) organisations, we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED and gRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

The Computational Sciences Centre of Excellence (CS CoE) is a global organisation enabling Roche’s Research and Early Development units to develop novel therapeutics that will have an impact on patient lives. Within the CS CoE, the Computational Biology and Medicine (CBM) department focuses on furthering our understanding of disease pathogenesis, patient populations, and target biology by having access to the largest Pharma R&D datasets in the world. In partnership with our scientists across pRED and gRED, we create better medicines by augmenting every part of R&D through our data-driven culture.

The Opportunity:

  • You will be a member of an interdisciplinary team dedicated to advancing our understanding of ocular diseases through the analysis of complex high-dimensional datasets.

  • Your work will contribute to identifying novel biomarkers and potentially novel therapeutic targets by interpreting data from the Aqueous Humour (AH) Atlas.

  • This project is part of the Ophthalmology Precision Medicine (OPM) initiative, involving protein and metabolite expression data from several hundred individuals.

  • You will be responsible for performing pQTL and mQTL analyses, including pre-analytical data management and quality control of phenotypic and genetic data.

  • The role involves post-processing the results to summarize, interpret, and present them in a collaborative and professional manner.

  • You will gain experience in Data Analysis and Insight Generation, specifically focusing on high-dimensional datasets, biomarker development, and data-driven insight generation.

  • You will develop skills in Collaboration and Strategy while working in a team culture that values a collaborative workplace, scientific rigor, open feedback, and scientific growth.

Who you are:

  • We are seeking a highly motivated computational intern to join our CBM Neuroscience & Ophthalmology group.

  • You should be enrolled in a Master’s program or be a recent graduate in computational biology, computer science, statistics, or a related field.

  • Candidates must have strong coding skills in R or Python along with experience using version control systems like git.

  • Prior experience working with Omics datasets, such as gene, protein, or metabolite expression data, is considered an important requirement for this role.

  • You should possess a research-driven mindset, where prior research project experience or publications are considered a plus.

  • We are looking for an independent, analytical, and collaborative individual with a passion for translating data into real patient impact.

  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, is required to ensure effective communication within our international team.

  • Working knowledge of a Linux/Unix environment and experience processing data on an HPC cluster, as well as prior experience in neuroscience, ophthalmology, or biomarker analyses, are a plus.

Application Process:

  • Please upload both your CV and a motivation letter with your application.

  • A certificate of enrolment (if you are currently studying). If you want to use this opportunity to do a Master’s or Diploma thesis, please highlight this in your application.

  • Non-EU/EFTA citizens must attach a confirmation from the university to the application documents, stating that a mandatory internship is part of the education.
