Cancer Research UK’s Internal Communications Team is part of our Communications department within the Policy, Information & Communication directorate. They collaborate across the organisation to manage and deliver internal communications for our 4,000 office staff and internal research infrastructure across the UK, providing strategic communications advice and developing high-impact campaigns, compelling content, and engagement activities to ensure colleagues are informed, engaged and inspired.

We’re looking for an Internal Communications Officer to act as the vital link between our Scientific Research & Innovation directorate and the Internal Communications team, supporting our organisational, R&I, and internal communications strategies. In this role, you’ll shape and deliver engaging content across our internal channels to drive staff engagement across R&I, while ensuring the wider charity understands and feels inspired by our latest scientific developments and stories.

This will involve managing regular communications channels and activities, leading on bespoke campaigns and projects from concept to delivery in collaboration with a range of stakeholders and teams, while using data and feedback to evaluate our internal impact and drive improvements. In addition, you’ll occasionally support the delivery of R&I Away Days and events.

What will I be doing?

  • Regularly delivering a range of impactful internal communications projects and campaigns for Cancer Research UK’s Scientific Research & Innovation (R&I) directorate. This will involve:

    • Ensuring internal communication activities align with Cancer Research UK’s values, brand, and tone of voice.

    • Sourcing, creating, and delivering internal content via SharePoint, Intranet, email, and e-newsletters.

    • Communicating and translating R&I’s scientific research, developments, and stories to the wider organisation.

  • Partnering closely with stakeholders to develop and deliver effective, multi-channel, and audience-led internal communications plans to support R&I’s staff engagement and strategic objectives.

  • Collaborating with the Internal Communications Manager, Senior Communications Manager (R&I), the wider Internal Communications team, and the Corporate Communications department to develop and deliver organisation-wide internal communications plans to communicate our science story to the whole of Cancer Research UK.

  • Developing an ongoing understanding of the communication needs of your audiences and collaborating closely with other internal communications colleagues to appropriately tailor and repurpose organisational-wide messages for R&I staff.

  • Supporting the delivery of rapid and effective internal communications support during urgent or crises, ensuring timely, clear, and coordinated messaging.

  • Developing and delivering communications plans and content for other cross-organisational projects led by teams outside R&I where required.

  • Reviewing communications performance and engagement using analytics, sharing regular insights, and recommending improvements to maximise impact.

  • Supporting with the communications, event planning, and project management for R&I Away Days and events.

What are you looking for?

  • Experienced Communications professional with a successful track record of delivering multi-channel communications within large, complex scientific research, health, or public health organisations.

    • We’re open to applicants from both internal and/ or external communications backgrounds

    • Experience delivering communications via channels such as intranet, SharePoint, email, and newsletters would be advantageous.

  • Scientifically literate with an understanding of scientific concepts and experience planning and delivering scientific communications projects and campaigns from start to finish.

  • Strong content creation, proofreading and copywriting skills.

  • Strong prioritisation, organisational, and project management skills with a proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while delivering to deadlines with strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with experience building credible, collaborative, and engaging stakeholder relationships at all levels.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to tell a story and translate complex scientific concepts into engaging, accessible, and tailored content for a diverse range of technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with a solutions-driven approach and an ability to think creatively about ways to engage audiences.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and using a content management system to publish content (experience using SharePoint would be advantageous).
