Summary:
The Chicago Tribune’s newsroom internship program seeks college juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates for six-month internships in 2026.
We prefer candidates who have completed at least one internship at a daily news organization other than their college paper but will take into consideration alternative experience that translates to news reporting. Interns will work 40 hours a week and must be able to, and often do, cover major stories their first days on the job.
What you will do:
Cover a mix of general assignment and specific beats that could include business, education, immigration and environment for the Chicago Tribune
Attend government and neighborhood meetings, profile community leaders, explore emerging trends, and more
Respond to breaking news, including crime and other law enforcement-related incidents
Craft feature and enterprise stories on a variety of issues in Chicago and the surrounding region
Work shifts that will vary depending on news needs, but candidates should expect weekend work
Gain valuable experience and build your journalism portfolio
What you will bring:
A track record of executing breaking and enterprise stories that demonstrates crisp writing, creative and insightful reporting and a commitment to serving the public good
Ability to meet deadlines
The skills to develop sources and the goal of becoming an expert on different topics
Planning and communication skills to keep editors posted on the progress of stories

Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly wage is $16.60. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
