Intern, Cyber Resilience Lab

The interns will support the establishment and day-to-day upkeep of the Cyber Resilience Lab, with exposure to the following capability areas:

  • cyber range and simulation environment setup
  • lab asset configuration and maintenance
  • cyber resilience testing and exercise support
  • documentation and SOP development
  • security validation and research tasks
  • support for showcase demonstrations and stakeholder visits

Scope of Work

The interns will, under supervision, support the following activities:
 

1. Lab Setup Support

  • assist in preparing lab systems, devices, and virtual environments for use;
  • support installation, configuration, and baseline setup of workstations, servers, virtual machines, and test devices;
  • assist in network segmentation, test bed preparation, and system imaging;
  • label, inventory, and track lab hardware and software assets;
  • support preparation of demonstration and training environments.
     

2. Lab Operations and Maintenance

  • assist in routine health checks of lab systems and equipment;
  • support patching, updates, re-imaging, and reset of test environments;
  • maintain asset registers, maintenance logs, and configuration records;
  • assist in troubleshooting basic hardware, software, and connectivity issues;
  • help ensure the lab remains organised, functional, and ready for exercises or demonstrations.
     

3. Cyber Resilience Exercise Support

  • assist in preparing scenarios for cyber range or resilience exercises;
  • support execution of tabletop, simulation, or hands-on technical exercises;
  • help monitor logs, dashboards, alerts, and exercise outputs during training activities;
  • assist in post-exercise clean-up, restoration, and reset of environments;
  • document observations, lessons learnt, and improvement points.
     

4. Security Testing and Research

  • support controlled testing of systems, applications, devices, or configurations within the lab;
  • assist in basic vulnerability assessment, log review, and validation activities;
  • support research tasks relating to AI security, hardware and device security, and security performance testing;
  • assist in preparing summaries, findings, and technical notes for internal use.
     

5. Documentation and SOP Development

  • draft and update lab SOPs, user guides, checklists, and setup notes;
  • prepare diagrams, system maps, and simple architecture documentation;
  • maintain records for exercises, maintenance, incidents, and asset changes;
  • support preparation of briefing materials and internal reports.
     

6. Demonstration and Engagement Support

  • help prepare the lab for visits, demonstrations, and internal showcase sessions;
  • support setup of exhibits, use-case walkthroughs, and technical displays;
  • assist facilitators during student, partner, or stakeholder engagement sessions;
  • support basic briefing material preparation for presentations and tours.
     

Learning Areas

Interns may be assigned work across one or more of the following themes:

  • AI security;
  • security and performance testing using cyber range environments;
  • hardware, robotics, and device security;
  • SOC operations and agentic SOC concepts;
  • digital resilience and recovery testing;
  • cyber defence engineering and automation.
     

Expected Deliverables

By the end of the internship, interns are expected to contribute to some or all of the following:

  • updated lab asset inventory and maintenance records
  • setup and configuration documentation
  • SOPs, checklists, or user guides for lab activities
  • exercise support materials or scenario notes
  • technical summaries or research notes
  • improvement recommendations for lab operations or resilience use cases
  • presentation materials or showcase support content.

 

Supervision and Boundaries

All work performed by interns shall be carried out under the supervision of authorised staff.

Interns shall not:

  • access production systems unless expressly authorised;
  • conduct uncontrolled offensive testing;
  • remove lab data, images, or documentation without approval;
  • make material architecture or security changes without review and sign-off.
     

Skills and Competencies to be Developed

The internship is intended to develop practical competencies in:

  • lab operations and technical support;
  • cyber hygiene and system hardening;
  • documentation and operational discipline;
  • cyber range and resilience exercise support;
  • basic security testing and analysis;
  • teamwork, reporting, and stakeholder support.
     

Internship Outcome:

At the end of the attachment, interns should have gained hands-on exposure to how a cyber resilience lab is built, maintained, and used to support training, testing, demonstrations, and resilience-focused cyber operations.
