About the Team
The Global Security Incident Response Team (GSIRT) helps protect Sony by improving cybersecurity awareness, readiness, and response across the organization. The Cyber Defense Team (CDT) focuses on strengthening security through data onboarding, vulnerability management, threat modeling, purple team activities, and automation, including opportunities to use AI tools and techniques.
This internship offers hands-on exposure to modern cybersecurity practices while working with a collaborative, experienced team that supports Sony’s global operations.
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated Intern, Cyber Defense to support key initiatives that help keep Sony secure. This role is designed for students who are excited to learn, explore technical concepts, and gain real world experience in cybersecurity. No prior professional experience requires – just curiosity, teamwork, and a willingness to dive in.
Interns will assist with security data processes, vulnerability tracking, threat research, purple team exercises, and basic automation tasks under the guidance of senior team members.
The CISD summer internship program is designed to provide skills, knowledge, and hands-on work experience in the information security and privacy industry, supporting the personal growth of our interns as well as Sony business results.
This 12‑week summer internship runs from June through August and offers flexibility to work either hybrid or fully remote.
Responsibilities:
Security Data & Telemetry Support
Review, organize, and validate security log data as it is onboarded into Sony’s security tools.
Assist with data onboarding intake, classification, and documentation processes.
Vulnerability Management
Support the evaluation of vulnerability reports and associated security risks.
Track remediation progress and help maintain clear, organized vulnerability records.
Threat Modeling & Research
Participate in basic threat modeling activities by learning how attackers might target systems.
Research common threats and assist in documenting potential security improvements.
Purple Team Activities
Support collaborative exercises that test security controls (working with offensive and defensive security staff).
Help gather information and document results from small-scale testing scenarios.
AI & Automation Support
Identify simple, repetitive, or manual tasks suitable for automation.
Contribute to basic scripting or AI driven workflow enhancements appropriate to your skill level.
General Cybersecurity Support
Participate in team meetings, knowledge sharing sessions, and training.
Assist with documentation, diagrams, process updates, and other team operational needs.
Bonus Skills (Not Required)
These are helpful but not expected - great for students who want to grow into them:
Familiarity with Splunk’s Search Processing Language (SPL)
Understanding of vulnerability management principles
Interest in AI/ML, automation, and workflow optimization
Honesty, trustworthiness, and ethical conduct are material requirements for the responsibilities outlined above.
Qualifications:
Current student pursuing a bachelors or master's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Demonstrated interest in cybersecurity and a desire to learn about modern cyber defense practices.
Basic understanding of computers, networks, and cloud concepts.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
Curiosity, problem-solving mindset, and willingness to explore new tools and technologies.
All candidates must be authorized to work in the USA.
The hourly rate for this internship depends on education level: $24.00 per hour for undergraduate candidates and $25.00–$27.00 per hour for graduate candidates. The individual will be paid hourly and eligible for overtime.
