Location: Edmonton or Calgary. This role is eligible for hybrid – this means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office (Edmonton / Calgary), on a scheduled rotation once training requirements have been met. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.  

Pay Range: : $65,456 - $88,351

General Accountability

Responsible for investigating, evaluating and settling moderately complex commercial auto and cargo insurance claims for SGI CANADA (Alberta). Collects, reviews and analyzes claims information to determine vehicle or cargo damage and values; interprets applicable acts, regulations and policy coverages; and negotiates claims settlements.

Key Accountabilities

Claims Investigation and Adjusting

  • Conducts interviews to establish and adjust reserves for more moderately complex claim files.

  • Ensures required forms and documents are completed and maintain claim records and files in accordance with corporate standards and provincial regulations.

  • Engages appropriate expertise when needed to assess risk and coverage application as per company guidelines.

  • Evaluates and processes requests for payments from multiple vendors.

  • Responds to inquiries for challenging claims and advance to appropriate company representatives where added authority or input is required.

  • Determines recovery opportunities for salvage and subrogation.

  • Provides training, coaching and work review assistance to less senior employees.

  • Seeks guidance and review of complex issues arising through claims handling and offers suggestions for equitable resolution.

  • Completes large loss reporting on claim files where required.

Customer Experience

  • Evaluates claim information to determine the appropriate expertise for the extent, type and location of loss.

  • Addresses coverage decision responses and payments in a concise and timely fashion.

  • Provides updates and information to all stakeholders to promote transparency and efficiency in the claims handling process.

  • Communicates with insured’s, drivers and safety department.

  • Anticipates client needs and seeks to find solutions while adhering to company guidelines.

Relationship Management

  • Develops and maintains a diverse vendor network to facilitate the best outcomes for claims settlements.

  • Develops and maintains relationships and communication with broker partners to promote trust and confidence in claims processes and procedures.

  • Liaises with experts in the commercial field (appraisers, shops, environmental remediation companies, engineers, legal)

  • Participates in and supports a team environment where collaboration and input is valued and respected by its members.

  • Acquires new information from industry sources and proposes ideas for process improvement and efficiencies.

Education & Experience

  • A two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business.

  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a technical insurance role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s automobile insurance legislation and regulations

  • Knowledge of commercial automobile insurance policy wording, including terminology

  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of insurance and techniques related to the settlement of claims.

  • Skill in determining actual cash values, depreciation, repair and replacement costs for vehicles.

  • Skill in applying IBC Agreement and Tort liability negotiations.

  • Knowledge of industry experts and when to engage them.
