OVERVIEW:
Alberta Blue Cross® is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Intermediate Accountant with a strong analytical mindset and a proactive approach to problem-solving. This role goes beyond transactional processing and is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys working with complexity, and communicates effectively with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will report to the Team Manager, Accounting and is a natural collaborator with a great attitude, strong work ethic and is a team player. This position requires someone who is dependable, engaged, collaborative, and willing to contribute positively to team culture while taking ownership of their responsibilities.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
Analyze operational data sources to prepare accurate, well-documented journal entries related to claims, administration fees, pooling arrangements, and other business activities with clear supporting rationale to support accurate financial reporting.
Work closely with internal stakeholders to obtain information required for accurate accounting.
Prepare monthly revenue recognition entries across multiple products and programs.
Prepare and maintain supporting working papers for all assigned entries and balances.
Perform balance sheet reconciliations and investigate/resolution of variances.
Contribute to executing the month end and year end processes in accordance with reporting timelines.
Support accounting treatment under applicable accounting standards.
Reconciliations & Controls
Prepare and maintain high-quality working papers, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and audit readiness with clear support and resolution of outstanding items.
Identify process gaps, unusual balances, or errors and proactively recommend improvements.
Investigate anomalies, variances, and unusual transactions through root-cause analysis and independent research.
Collaborate with other departments to obtain necessary information for accurate reconciliations.
Maintain organized documentation to support audit and internal review requirements
Responsible for supporting and working within the internal control framework.
Team & Continuous Improvement
Contribute positively to team culture through professionalism, reliability, and collaboration.
Support teammates during peak periods and month-end deadlines.
Demonstrates adaptability in a changing environment by embracing new processes, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, and maintaining a forward-looking mindset focused on better ways of working rather than relying solely on legacy practices.
Provide coverage for another Intermediate Accountant, which includes:
Depositing cheques.
Applying payments to customer accounts.
Assisting with other transactional accounting functions as needed.
Demonstrate a willingness to learn, take initiative, and go the extra mile when needed.
WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Five plus years of accounting experience with full-cycle accounting and reconciliation processes; however, candidates holding a CPA designation will be considered in lieu of the experience requirement.
Proven experience preparing supporting documentation for month-end, audits, and financial reporting.
Experience working with large ERP systems is considered an asset.
Strong proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
Exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure changes are effectively communicated and integrated, fostering an environment of adaptability and collaboration.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
