Job Summary: You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ GEOPHYSICIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER in the Seafloor Interactions Branch, Acoustic Modeling and Databases Division, Acoustics Department of the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Major Duties:

  • You will provide ongoing technical support for the development, implementation, and maintenance of geophysical and acoustic gridded databases in support of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and acoustic performance predictions.
  • You will employ knowledge of database methods and techniques to facilitate the building and configuration management of geophysical gridded databases.
  • You will apply environment, underwater sound propagation, geophysical data interpretation, and geophysical analysis.
  • You will participate in multidisciplinary surveys, plan geophysical surveys, and interact with Navy personnel, scientists, analysts, contractors, and technicians.
  • You will perform temporary duty aboard survey platforms in accordance with current NAVOCEANO survey duty instructions.

Qualifications: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Physical Scientists GS-1301: Experience determining available geophysical data coverage for assigned geophysical areas through library searches, database queries, and external contacts. Experience initiating actions to collect available geophysical data in data deficient areas. Experience initiating requests to perform geophysical surveys in areas where available data coverage is inadequate. Experience drafting geophysical survey plans based on existing data coverage and database requirements. Geophysicist GS-1313: Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining regional, gridded geophysical databases. Experience interpreting geophysical data, maps regional stratigraphy, computing layer thickness, and gird thickness. Experience assessing the accuracy of existing geophysical databases, building upgraded databases, verifying and validating databases, and preparing database documentation. Experience estimating geoacoustic parameters and acoustic province boundaries. Oceanographer GS-1360: Experience supporting acoustic database development, implementation, and maintenance, focusing on geophysical database addressing questions and concerns regarding geophysical database, its accuracy, geoacoustic parameters, and acoustic boundaries. Experience supporting anti-submarine warfare (ASW) acoustic analyses and forensic reconstructions, focusing on geophysical components within the analyses. Experience gathering and analyzing geophysical data and databases, identifying geophysical features and properties impacting acoustics, and documents results. Experience recommending upgrading geophysical databases in areas where database accuracy is inadequate. Experience planning, performing, addressing problems, modifying existing, or adapting new methods and procedures to produce acoustic analyses and forensic reconstruction.
