The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug (AOD) programs including withdrawal management, residential and non-residential rehabilitation, and harm reduction programs. Salvos services go beyond addressing the core issues and challenges associated with problematic substance abuse and provide participants a place of hope, compassion, and dignity to recover safely. 

About the role 

As an Intake and Referral Worker, this is your opportunity to provide a responsive intake service to people seeking support from Gambler’s Help Therapeutic Counselling program, including comprehensive needs identification at point of engagement. 

Reporting to the Senior Gambler’s Help Therapeutic Counsellor, this is a 12-month fixed term role offering 30.4 hours a week, located in Kensington, VIC.  

 
How you will make an impact  

  • Deliver educative and therapeutic counselling to individuals, couples, families, and groups across multiple platforms (face-to-face, phone, text, online), ensuring ethical, effective, and accountable practice. 

  • Provide responsive intake services, assess client needs and risks, manage waiting lists, and offer brief interventions or crisis support when required. 

  • Organise, design, and facilitate group programs (including problem gambling support), ensuring ongoing assessment and appropriate referral of participants. 

  • Identify service gaps, contribute to program planning and quality improvement, maintain accurate records, and provide reports to the Clinical Team Leader. 

  • Conduct training and secondary consultations, liaise with service providers, and build strategic relationships to strengthen peer education and professional development. 

 

What you will bring 

  • Tertiary qualifications in psychology or social work or other related disciplines are mandatory 

  • Relevant experience in a social service environment 

  • Applicants must be registered in accordance with the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (Victoria) Act 2009 or have membership of the Australian Association of Social (AASW) or have membership of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA)

Conditions  

Compensation is in accordance with Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award Level 5
