Position Summary
The Instrumentation and Calibration Lead provides technical leadership and oversight for the calibration, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation and control systems across campus facilities and process equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure all systems operate within specified parameters while maximizing efficiency. The position involves leading a team of technicians, coordinating with external service providers, and implementing solutions to protect equipment integrity and personnel safety.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Supervision Lead and mentor a team of instrumentation technicians in daily calibration and maintenance activities. Assign work tasks, review completed work, and ensure quality standards are met. Provide technical guidance and training to team members on calibration procedures and troubleshooting techniques. Coordinate team schedules and manage workload distribution to meet production and compliance deadlines.
Advanced System Maintenance and Optimization Lead complex troubleshooting and diagnostics for building automation, process control, and analytical instrumentation systems. Perform and oversee precision calibrations across diverse instrument portfolios, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and analytical equipment. Optimize control loop performance and train team members on system improvements to achieve superior environmental control and energy efficiency outcomes.
Advanced Calibration Operations Perform and supervise multi-point calibrations on temperature transmitters, pressure sensors, flow devices, pH meters, conductivity analyzers, and analytical systems using NIST-traceable standards. Execute and oversee linearity checks, span adjustments, and zero calibrations on analytical balances, spectrophotometers, particle counters, and environmental monitoring equipment. Utilize and train others on dead weight testers, dry block calibrators, and multifunction process calibrators to achieve required measurement uncertainties.
Technical Systems Management Lead team operations with building management systems (BMS) and computerized maintenance monitoring systems (CMMS) to perform daily tasks and manage manufacturing procedure data. Coordinate system updates and improvements with engineering and IT departments.
Critical System Calibration Leadership Oversee and perform calibrations on Water for Injection (WFI) conductivity and TOC analyzers, Clean Steam quality monitors, and compressed gas purity analyzers. Lead calibration activities for HVAC differential pressure transmitters, environmental chamber instrumentation, and filling line equipment including weight checks and volume verification systems.
Documentation and Compliance Management Review and approve calibration certificates documenting as-found/as-left conditions and measurement uncertainties. Maintain calibration databases and ensure team compliance with CGMP. Develop and update calibration procedures and establish intervals based on instrument analysis and regulatory requirements.
Program Leadership and Coordination Develop and implement risk-based calibration strategies considering instrument criticality and regulatory requirements. Analyze calibration data trends to optimize intervals and recommend equipment upgrades to management. Coordinate complex schedules to minimize process disruption while meeting compliance timelines. Manage and evaluate vendor relationships for specialized calibration services.
Training and Development Develop and deliver comprehensive technical training programs on calibration techniques and troubleshooting methodologies. Demonstrate leadership while managing competing priorities effectively. Create training materials and standard operating procedures for team use.
