About Us

ConocoPhillips’ Australian headquarters are located in Brisbane. Our focus is supplying Australian customers with natural gas and international customers with liquefied natural gas. We do this through our 47.5 percent interest in the Australia Pacific LNG joint venture, one of the largest producers of natural gas in eastern Australia. ConocoPhillips Australia also operates the Australia Pacific LNG liquefied natural gas facility near Gladstone. We are also an exploration company, with ongoing exploration occurring in the Bowen and Surat Basin in Central Queensland and new exploration in the Otway Basin along the southern coast of Australia to identify natural gas reserves for supply to Australian customers.

About the Role

As a member of the ConocoPhillips (COP) Australia Pacific LNG Downstream (DS) Maintenance & Reliability team, this position contributes to the development of a learning organization which embraces a commitment to operational excellence through continuous improvement while achieving zero injuries or incidents and compliance to our standards and processes.

Reporting to the M&R Supervisor - Reliability, the Instrument, Control and Telecom Specialist will provide advanced skills and support on Instrumentation, Controls and Telecommunication systems whilst also delivering maintenance strategy development, troubleshooting and problem analysis and Defect Elimination (DE) investigations.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support Production Operations and Maintenance teams with troubleshooting Instrument, Control & Telecommunications equipment. Provide technical clarifications and assist with risk ranking of maintenance notifications.

  • Coach and mentor Maintenance and Production Operations teams on Instrument, Control, and Telecommunications aspects of their work.

  • Review SIS & SCE critical function test results and develop action plans as required.

  • Actively participate in the Maintenance Change Request process (for ongoing M&R program refinement) and the Maintenance Deferment Process (to improve maintenance execution compliance).

  • Audit maintenance and preservation of Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications equipment and spare parts.

  • Monitor and maintain costs associated with the Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications M&R Program as part of the overall APLNG M&R budget.

  • Review and risk assess PM deferrals related to Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications equipment.

  • Take ownership of Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications equipment-related HAZID/IRMS items, vulnerabilities, and unease.

  • Support the Defect Elimination process and facilitate Root Cause Analysis for Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications systems and equipment.

  • Contribute to the Management of Change process.

  • Provide input to the scoping of Instrumentation, Controls, and Telecommunications equipment maintenance.

  • Supervise short-term contract personnel when on-site performing work.

You will bring to the role:

  • Cultural alignment with ConocoPhillips’ SPIRIT Values

  • 10+ years’ experience with industrial instrumentation and control equipment in oil & gas, petrochemical, or heavy industry

  • Electrical Trade Qualification with Queensland Electrical Mechanic License

  • Strong maintenance and fault-finding skills across:

    • Instrumentation (control valves, actuators, pressure/flow/temperature monitoring, vibration monitoring, fire & gas systems)

    • Telecommunications (radio comms, PAGA, external comms, CCTV, access control/intruder detection)

  • Solid understanding of PLC, DCS, and SIS plant control systems

  • EEHA installation & maintenance competency with 5+ years practical experience

  • SAP or similar CMMS experience

  • Knowledge of Queensland Electrical Safety Act, regulations, and codes

  • Experience with permit-to-work systems, administration, and authority

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical or Instrumentation & Control Engineering (Associate Degree level) an advantage

  • Experience managing contractor companies and employees

  • Preferred: team supervision, auditing qualifications, defect elimination, and root cause analysis
