Summary of Job Duties:

The Medical Physicist (Instructor) supports and advances clinical operations across the UAMS Radiation Oncology Clinic and the Proton Center of Arkansas, contributing to institutional initiatives in quality, safety, education, and clinical innovation. This faculty position provides independent professional expertise in treatment planning, dose calculation, and quality assurance to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered radiation therapy.
The physicist provides clinical coverage for photon and/or proton therapy services, including daily treatment support; commissioning, calibration, and routine and patient-specific quality assurance of treatment planning, delivery, and imaging systems; and maintenance of QA programs in accordance with AAPM, regulatory, and institutional standards. Collaboration with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, engineers, and staff is essential to support safe workflows, complex treatment planning, and chart review processes.
The position also supports the clinical implementation and optimization of advanced technologies, such as SRS/SBRT, proton therapy, surface-guided radiation therapy, motion management, dual-energy CT, and emerging treatment and imaging platforms. As a faculty member, the physicist participates in education and mentorship, accreditation and regulatory activities, quality improvement initiatives, translational clinical research, and departmental service. The role operates under general direction and exercises broad professional judgment in executing complex clinical and technical responsibilities.


Qualifications:

  • MSc or higher in Physics or a closely related discipline.

  • Graduation from a CAMPEP-approved Medical Physics Residency Program.

Responsibilities

Clinical Operations & Patient Care Support

  • Provide clinical coverage for photon and/or proton therapy services, including daily treatment support

  • Perform commissioning, calibration, and routine quality assurance of treatment planning, delivery, and imaging systems

  • Conduct patient-specific QA and support complex treatment planning and chart review processes

  • Maintain quality assurance programs in accordance with AAPM, regulatory, and institutional standards

Technology & Innovation

  • Support implementation and optimization of advanced technologies, including SRS/SBRT, proton therapy, surface-guided radiation therapy, motion management, and dual-energy CT

  • Assist with integration of emerging treatment and imaging platforms into clinical workflows

Collaboration & Team Support

  • Collaborate with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, engineers, and clinical staff to ensure safe and efficient operations

  • Contribute to workflow optimization and continuous improvement initiatives

Education, Research & Service

  • Participate in education and mentorship of trainees and staff

  • Support accreditation, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement activities

  • Engage in translational clinical research and departmental service
