Summary of Job Duties:

The Medical Physicist (Instructor) supports clinical operations across the UAMS Radiation Oncology Clinic and the Proton Center of Arkansas, contributing to quality, safety, education, and clinical innovation. This role provides professional expertise in treatment planning, dose calculation, and quality assurance to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered radiation therapy.

This position delivers clinical physics support for photon and/or proton therapy services, including daily treatment operations, treatment planning and verification, and imaging support. Responsibilities include commissioning, calibration, and ongoing quality assurance of treatment planning systems, delivery units, and imaging systems in accordance with AAPM, regulatory, and institutional standards.

The Medical Physicist collaborates closely with physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, engineers, and staff to support safe clinical workflows, complex treatment planning, and chart review processes. The role also supports the implementation and optimization of advanced technologies, including SRS/SBRT, proton therapy, surface-guided radiation therapy, motion management, and emerging imaging and treatment platforms.

As a faculty member, this position contributes to education and mentorship, accreditation and regulatory activities, quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and departmental service. The role operates under general direction and exercises independent professional judgment in executing complex clinical and technical responsibilities.


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (MSc) or higher in Physics or a closely related discipline

  • Graduation from a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program

Responsibilities:

Clinical Physics, Dosimetry Support, and Quality Assurance

  • Provide clinical physics support for photon and/or proton therapy services

  • Support daily treatment operations, image guidance, and treatment planning activities

  • Perform plan reviews, independent dose calculations, and comprehensive chart reviews

  • Conduct patient-specific and routine quality assurance procedures

  • Commission, calibrate, and maintain treatment planning systems, delivery units, and imaging systems

  • Develop, maintain, and improve QA programs in alignment with AAPM and regulatory standards

  • Collaborate with clinical teams to resolve technical and workflow challenges

Program Development, Education, and Institutional Service

  • Support safe, efficient, and patient-centered clinical workflows

  • Participate in departmental committees, accreditation processes, and quality initiatives

  • Contribute to program development and continuous improvement efforts

  • Provide education and mentorship to residents, students, and staff

  • Support research and academic mission activities

  • Perform additional duties as assigned
