Description of Position: The Criminal Justice department is seeking qualified candidates to fill a part-time temporary position for the Fall 2026 semester. The following courses are available to teach:

·      Introduction to Criminology (CRIM 1125) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 830-1020 (single section of 40 students; fully in person delivery)

Students are introduced to criminology as an academic discipline and as a profession. They explore key concepts and terminology, trace the evolution of criminological thought, and uncover how criminology connects with other academic disciplines. Students also develop a critical appraisal of theoretical explanations, research methods, and the philosophical and political foundations of modern criminological policy.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Arts degree in Criminology with a PhD preferred (or related social science degree)
  • Demonstrated post-secondary teaching experience
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and a strong commitment to ensuring students are supported throughout their studies
  • Ability and willingness to contribute in department meetings and initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent teaching experience of this course at a post-secondary institution or graduate course work in the area

NOTE:

Although the current posting is specific to teaching Introduction to Criminology, candidates will be invited in the interview to consider the range of courses offered in our department that they are qualified to teach. In particular, we would anticipate a future need for a faculty member qualified to teach in the area of research methods.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain currency and strive for excellence in instructional practices and approaches
  • Maintain currency in relevant subject areas, including global and/or local trends, issues, and opportunities
  • Ensure effective use of available class time, and maintain appropriate office hours to ensure availability for student consultation
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships
  • As appropriate, actively seek opportunities to integrate students and learning into organizations and/or the community
  • On an as needed basis, participate actively in program design and review
  • Be a positive and active contributor to initiatives in the Criminal Justice Department, Community Programs Division, Faculty of Social Sciences & Community Programs, and the College.

Salary Range:
 

$46.06 - $142.49


Salary Range Placement: Salary placement is on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
