Job Description

Academic Faculty Contract, 171-days, Tenure Track, Benefits Eligible

Job Duties

  • Teach 30 equated load hours/year (to include preparation time, grading, etc.); develop and grade exams and projects to evaluate student learning and progress; monitor student progress, maintain accurate attendance rosters and submit student grades, as required. 

  • Deliver courses at all program levels. Courses may be offered day, evening and weekends through a variety of modalities from face-to-face to fully online. This may include delivering courses at rural and high school locations. 

  • Maintain a minimum of 5 office hours/week/semester. 

  • Participate in division meetings, advisory board meetings, and gatherings supporting faculty/industry collaborations. 

  • Support learning through student engagement, incorporating pedagogical strategies that encourage active engagement, utilize problem-based activities, and promote authentic application of knowledge. 

  • Participate in program promotion activities such as open houses, school visits, tours, development of promotional material, social media, or other relevant activities. 

  • Advocate for curricular and programmatic changes based on data, research, industry feedback and other knowledge-based reviews. 

  • Build and sustain relationships with current and potential external partners; including but not limited to industry and K-12 partners. 

  • Employ a student-centered approach to education. 

  • Demonstrate a commitment to growing and enhancing the Automotive Technology program. 

  • Participate in strategic planning, goal setting, course and program assessment, and course outline development that is aligned with student 
    learning objectives. 

  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the college, as well as with employer partners, to deliver curriculum meeting today’s professional standards for the industry. 

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the program of learning to ensure student progression through and graduation from the degree program. 

  • Serve on college committees as assigned. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned to provide a high-quality learning experience for students.

  • Ability to utilize automotive diagnostic, service, and repair software/technology. 

  • Knowledge and ability to use personal computers, applicable software and the Internet. 

  • Effective communication skills with students, faculty and other community members. 

  • Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies. 

  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. 

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations. 

  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs. 

  • Effective teaching, facilitation and classroom management skills. 

  • Knowledge of vocational and/or academic education curricula. 

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant current educational methodologies and techniques. 

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of automotive technician experience; AND, ASE-Certified Master Automotive Technicians or equivalent OEM Certification;

  • OR, an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience

Minimum Starting Salary Information:

The minimum of the placement range for this position is $49,728. The salary grade is based on the selected candidate's level of academic preparation: COMMUNITY COLLEGE ACADEMIC SALARY GRADES. The selected candidate will be placed at or above the minimum based on years of related, professional experience. WNC's placement range falls within the NSHE salary schedule: ACADEMIC SALARY SCHEDULE-COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

Overload Compensation

Academic faculty are eligible for additional compensation (overload), paid in addition to their base salary, when their teaching courseload exceeds the contract determined instructional full load threshold, currently 30 instructional units per academic year. 

Retirement – NSHE Faculty Retirement Plan Alternative (RPA)

All faculty and professional staff working at least half-time equivalent must participate in the NSHE Faculty Retirement Plan Alternative (RPA) as a condition of employment. The current contribution rate is 19.25%. Your contribution is matched by the College at 19.25%.

Your contributions are made by pre-tax salary reduction and you are 100% vested from your first day. You choose how to invest your own and NSHE’s contributions. The plan administrator provides dedicated financial consultants that are available to assist you in your investment deliberations. Faculty and staff who have previously participated in the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada (PERS) may be required to continue participation in PERS. 

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) does not participate in the federal Social Security System but does contribute to the federal Medicare program. This means that while you are employed by NSHE neither you nor NSHE contribute to Social Security and you do not earn a Social Security benefit.
