We Require

  • Two years of experience in civil inspection or construction management

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Post-secondary education experience may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, construction practices, or related fields

  • Experience with civil construction practices, including aspects related to roads and streets construction, in related construction trades, and/or experience in civil plans review

  • Experience with the management of stormwater in desert environments

Job Contributions

  • Provide field analysis and a cursory review of submittals for construction for developers and home builders prior to issuance of a building permit

  • Inspect residential dwellings, industrial and commercial properties, swimming pools, and appurtenances in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with drainage, floodplain, and zoning codes, regulations, and policies

  • Inspect the construction of stormwater systems associated with streets and roadways; coordinate findings with transportation officials and inspectors

  • Explain to contractors, owners, and developers the code's interpretation or requirements that have been missed

  • Communicate to the general public and businesses, imparting methods for the correction of observed deficiencies or deviations from approved plans to determine and ensure compliance

  • Write field inspection reports and notices in a clear, concise, and accurate manner, and investigate complaints regarding unauthorized or unsafe civil construction

  • Inspect mobile homes for installation related to drainage, including blocking, tie downs, skirting, utility hookups, and setbacks

  • Conduct final inspection prior to issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy, and conduct inspections related to temporary occupancy

  • Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, building plans, aerials, EDR (electronic digital submittals), and technical data/drawings to verify that construction complies with approved documents, including all related zoning case files

  • Participate in project meetings to plan and review project progress, schedules, and assign inspections for daily routes

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, or requires walking or standing to a significant degree

  • The work will be conducted in both office and field environments. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

  • Requires work at field locations with exposure to dust, construction and operational noise, strong odors, and uneven terrain. Fieldwork may occur in all weather conditions, including extreme heat. Must have the manual dexterity of hands and body to operate office equipment, field inspection equipment, and a motor vehicle; must be able to manage frequent interruptions, time pressures, high work volumes, multiple and complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, team-oriented activities, prompt decision-making and interaction with government officials and the public; must constantly maintain concentration, accuracy, ethical behavior, and a professional demeanor. The maximum weight required to lift, push, pull, or carry is 50 pounds. Traveling from inspection to inspection in rural areas can require sitting for long periods of time
