Inpatient Care ManagementOverview of Position:
The Director of Inpatient Capacity Management provides strategic and operational leadership for hospital-wide patient flow, capacity management, and care coordination across the continuum. This role integrates patient logistics functions—including inpatient case management, bed management, transfer center operations, service response coordination, and Care Traffic Control—to ensure timely access to care, efficient patient movement, and optimal use of hospital capacity.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Strategic Leadership & Operations
1. Leads the hospital-wide patient flow and capacity management strategy, aligning patient logistics operations with ancillary, clinical, and support services.
2. Serves as the operational authority for throughput optimization, surge management, and capacity escalation.
3. Translates organizational access, growth, quality, and patient experience goals into actionable patient logistics and throughput initiatives.
4. Represents patient logistics on hospital and system committees related to operations, quality, safety, access, and population health.
Inpatient Case Management Oversight
5. Provides leadership and oversight for Inpatient Case Management, including RN Case Managers and Social Work staff.
6. Ensures effective care coordination, discharge planning, payer authorization processes, and activities related to patient flow, and transitions of care.
7. Partners with physicians, nursing leadership, ancillary services, and post-acute providers to reduce avoidable days, improve discharge efficiency, and support timely transitions.
8. Oversees staffing models, workflows, and performance expectations to ensure consistent application of professional case management standards.
Bed board / Bed Management
9. Oversee Bed board operations to ensure accurate, real-time visibility of bed availability and appropriate patient placement.
10. Standardizes admission, transfer, and discharge workflows to optimize bed utilization, reduce emergency department boarding, and improve inpatient flow.
11. Collaborates with EVS, nursing units, and support services to improve bed turnaround times and readiness.
Transfer Center Operations
12. Oversee Transfer Center operations, including inbound and outbound transfers and physician-to-physician communication.
13. Ensures timely acceptance, placement, and completion of transfers based on clinical capability, capacity, and organizational priorities.
14. Supports service line growth and access to specialty care by improving the efficiency and reliability of transfer processes.
Care Traffic Control (CTC) Program
15. Works collaboratively with system leaders on the Care Traffic Control (CTC) program, including daily operational huddles, capacity reviews, and escalation protocols.
16. Drives interdisciplinary alignment during periods of constrained capacity or surge.
17. Ensures standardized communication, decision-making, and accountability related to patient movement and resource allocation.
Performance Improvement & Analytics
18. Leads patient throughput and capacity improvement initiatives using data analytics, performance metrics, and operational dashboards.
19. Partners with Quality, Finance, IT, and Analytics teams to develop actionable insights related to patient flow, length of stay, discharge efficiency, and access.
20. Analyzes trends to identify opportunities for process redesign, system optimization, and improved interdisciplinary coordination.
21. Ensures patient logistics operations align with regulatory, payer, and accreditation requirements related to patient placement, transfers, and discharge planning.
Professional Leadership & Development
22. Maintains compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) requirements, and applicable accreditation standards.
23. Maintains professional knowledge through participation in educational programs, leadership development, and professional organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration required.
2. Current Ohio RN license (or active multi-state licensure) required.
3. Minimum of five (5) years of management or demonstrated leadership experience required.
4. Knowledge and understanding of case management acquired through case management or an equivalent combination of related professional experience, education, or training.
5. Knowledge of patient logistics, hospital throughput, case management, discharge planning regulations, bed management, transfer operations, continuum of care services, and population health principles.
6. Demonstrated ability to analyze data and leverage information systems to improve operational performance and patient flow.
7. Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary collaboration across clinical, ancillary, and operational teams.
8. Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
