JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40

Work Shift: Mon - Fri 7:30am - 4:00pm

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for working with the Director of Infection Prevention in directing St. Tammany Health System’s activities aimed at preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) by ensuring that sources of infections are isolated to limit the spread of infectious organisms.  The IP systematically collects, analyzes, and interprets health data in order to plan, implement, evaluate, and disseminate appropriate public health practices. The IP works with the Office of Public Health to identify outbreaks and initiate action plans to mitigate the outbreak. Additionally, it is often the responsibility of the IP to perform the reporting of HAI and quality data for the various facility, county, state, and federal reporting requirements. The IP also makes recommendations regarding construction, renovation, and environmental rounds and assures compliance with national and/or professional standards. The IP conducts educational and training activities for healthcare workers through instruction and dissemination of information on healthcare practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidate must have completed post-secondary education in a health-related field including but not limited to medicine, nursing, laboratory technology, public health, or biology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, epidemiology, microbiology, medical technology, public health, or another health-related field preferred
  • Two years of hospital-based healthcare experience required
  • Experience in Infection Prevention preferred but not required
  • Active licensure if required by state governing body i.e. Registered Nurse, Med Tech, Social Work, Respiratory Therapist
  • Certified in Infection Control or obtain certification within three years of employment required
  • Collaboration, leadership, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to implement evidence-based guidelines
  • Knowledge and ability to collect, analyze, and present data
  • Must maintain a positive, professional impression when dealing with all customers
  • A good command of the spoken and written English language is required

Physical Demands:

Must possess good physical health.  Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.  Lifting at least 10 pounds is required.  

Physical Effort required:        

Constant (67%-100%) – talking, hearing, seeing, stooping, crouching

Frequently (34%-66%) – reaching

Occasionally (1%-33%) – lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, handling/feeling
