Career Planning Service

The Career Planning Service (CaPS) supports McGill students and recent alumni in the exploration of their career options. This includes not only internships but also permanent, part-time, and summer job searches. CaPS also help students develop lifelong career management skills by providing workshops, individual advising, a comprehensive job posting service, and an extensive Career Resource Centre.

Position Summary :

Reporting to the Director, the Industry Liaison Associate at McGill Career Planning Service (CaPS), will play a pivotal role in fostering strong connections between our academic community and external partners, actively engaging with employers, alumni, and industry representatives to provide information on career and internship opportunities, organize meetings, solicit job postings, manage career events and discuss opportunities for McGill.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a diverse range of industries to understand their hiring needs, trends, and expectations. .
  • Act as point of contact for companies recruiting students and recent graduates
    • Organize meetings with prospective and current employers seeking detailed information about our career services, including student recruitment and company promotion opportunities. Assist employers with the job posting process, event registration, and interview scheduling using the McGill career management system.
    • Connect employers to appropriate/more specific resources when required (e.g.,.: CaPS ADs or Director, other career and coop offices at McGill)
  • Engage in regular communication with industry representatives to gain insights into their perspectives on workforce needs and skills gaps. 
  • Advocate for internship and placement opportunities within industries by promoting the benefits of engaging with university talent. 
  • Develop and deliver placement or project preparation information for students and industry partners, as required.
  • Connect employers with McGill Faculty members, Faculty Career or Internship Offices to enhance research opportunities, projects, and industry-sponsored initiatives. 
  • Collaborate with internship offices, experiential learning administrators, and faculties to strategically manage and develop relationships with key sectors, external organizations, partners, and alumni. 
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director,  and Career Services team to align outreach efforts and manage the development of initiatives. 
  • Guide students in their ongoing development and application of skills acquired through their CaPS managed Work-integrated Learning (WIL) experiences.
  • Act as a liaison between students and industry partners on workplace-related issues.
  • Conduct site visits to develop and maintain relationships with industry partners (as required).
  • Assemble, maintain, and report statistics on the WIL experience activity and maintain student and industry partner records (industry partner database); prepare monthly reports/update and final report.
  • Gather and present data on industry trends and employer feedback and industry collaboration to continually improve career services.
  • Develop and deliver communications, such as targeted emails, newsletters, social media posts to support career engagement activities 

Event Coordination

  • Organize and host industry-focused events, such as career fairs, employer information sessions, and networking events to connect students with potential employers. 
  • Organize workshops and seminars to enhance students' professional development and industry knowledge. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Recruitment and Placement Clerk, as needed with employer/job posting and event approvals in myFuture
  • Provide support to the frontline staff, when required during vacations, breaks, leaves
  • Back up to mentor program Career Advisor and facilitate connections for current students. 

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Experience in student recruitment and placement or in business development and employer relations.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary institution, an asset
  • Knowledge and experience in job search strategies and interview techniques.
  • In-depth understanding of industry, government, and business operations and functions, coupled with the ability to serve as an effective liaison among students, employers, and the University.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French, enabling effective interaction with internal and external contacts in both official languages. Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web-based applications.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 (Fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
