Job Summary: Industrial Hygiene Program expert at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Systems (CAVHCS) and provides technical assistance and evaluation involving industrial hygiene, decontamination, respiratory protection, asbestos control and abatement, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hearing conservation, confined space, hazard communication, ergonomics, thermal extremes, indoor air quality, nitrous oxide, mercury, waste anesthetic gases, chemical and biological hood testing, and anti-neo-plastic drugs.

Major Duties:

  • Duties include but not limited too: Performs a variety of Industrial hygiene functions. Conducting health and safety inspections at the CAVHCS locations. Responsibility for highly complex and sensitive inspections. Identifies and requisitions test equipment used in performing industrial hygiene tasks. Performs and arranges for proper calibration and maintenance of equipment. Plans and conducts training for employees requiring personal protective equipment such as respirators, protective clothing, etc. Actively participates in and advises the facility GEMS committee, Emergency Management Committee, Accident Review Board, Infection Control Committee and the Executive Safety Committee on matters related to IH and decontamination. Serves as leader of the CAVHCS emergency decontamination response team. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/08/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Basic Requirements: Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). CERTIFICATION REQUIRED In addition to the above, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Knowledge of safety and occupational health principles, practices, procedures and standards s applicable to a full range of complex safety and occupational health management responsibilities; Knowledge of healthcare work processes, procedures, equipment, facilities, materials, and activities sufficient to anticipate and control hazards, to evaluate and determine causal factors contributing to accidents and resulting hazardous working conditions; and Knowledge of environmental management systems, respiratory protection programs and decontamination programs sufficient to establish, develop and continually improve these programs at a VA medical center. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Inspections require moderate "physical exertions", including walking, standing, crawling, kneeling and bending. Moderate lifting and carrying of equipment, use of personal protective devices, and work in hazardous and confined spaces is required. Use of all appendages, good vision and hearing are necessary. Emotional and mental stability are required. Periodic travel to Carl Vinson VAMC Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and Veterans Centers (typically by government vehicle) is required to conduct Industrial Hygiene program evaluations or to perform other survey activities as described above.
