Industrial Engineering Manager- WTC

Hybrid. This position requires an employee to be on-site a minimum of 3 days per week at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, MI.

The Role:

In this role, you will lead an Industrial Engineering (IE) Team for Manufacturing Excellence. You will partner with multiple organizations including Manufacturing Leadership, Plant Resources, Continuous Improvement Teams, Manufacturing Excellence Shop Directors, Finance, HR, Manufacturing Engineering and others to achieve Business Plan Deployment (BPD) objectives and key performance metrics through disciplined use of IE processes, tools, and coaching. Work is of a high-level, technical nature using independent judgment focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). You will be expected to solve complex problems, develop talent, and drive the design and deployment of next generation tools for performance reporting and change management. 

What You'll Do: (Responsibilities)

  • Partner with Manufacturing Excellence Leadership to drive improvement in business performance metrics including Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environmental Metrics.
  • IE Team serves as the owner and subject matter experts for Global Workbook/Power BI data analysis and reporting. Ensuring accurate, timely, and standardized output that support plant and enterprise decision-making across all sectors of North America. Also maintains coordination with global partners and historical recall.
  • Lead development of jobs and hours for North America Manufacturing Plant Budgets and Long-term Plan.  Consolidate for all sectors and across NA. Deliver actionable insights to support target attainment.
  • Lead transition to an automated publication of performance to plan (ie Mfg Scorecards, Manufacturing Excellence Index and Automation Dashboard), while maintaining governance, reporting standards and global alignment. Support performance forensics and provide actionable insights.
  • Lead analysis for operational performance improvement.  Including required to run and absenteeism analysis, payroll vs jobs reconciliation, ownership of target change control process.  Lead special projects and data reconciliations as assigned.
  • Support Shop Director led Benchmarking processes in preparation for Budget and Long-term Plan development. Provide glidepaths for Hours per Unit and inputs for Financial deep-dives and cost studies as requested.
  • Support and/or co-lead enterprise systems and interfaces as assigned, including GWB 2.0 WD Adaptive Interface, Calibration Tool (STDS), APS cleanup activities and dashboard development activities.
  • Leverage a broad-based understanding of IE tools and processes (APS, STDS, GWB, STAR Guide, line balance methodology, waste elimination/CIP workshops, pace management, operator-machine charts, ergonomics, GMOS/material flow, etc.) to support establishing smart targets and provide meaningful insights and enable coaching, teaching and further development of the IE Team’s capability.

Expertise:

  • Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of complex technologies, techniques and concepts specifically related to industrial engineering principles and manufacturing. Ability to engage in detail as well as summarize appropriately for intended level of communication.
  • Responsible for end-to-end process. Apply professional knowledge to generate and implement new ideas, including AI solutions and alternative resolutions to critical issues.
  • Steer course of action within area of responsibility, leverage latitude in decision making and actions in a complex environment where recommendations are expected.

Complexity:

  • Work on unique and multidimensional issues of significant complexity and create strategic and innovative solutions. Solutions are often created with limited information and require long-term perspective. Requires confident independent judgement, and discretion on significant matters with impact that extends beyond own function.
  • Position allows for discretion in setting objectives and determining approaches for important assignments. Identify, develop, and embrace challenges and opportunities to exceed a goal. Set stretch goals for self and team with relevant metrics to achieve beyond what is expected.
  • Often required to use high level communication skills to negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, where interests are not aligned.
  • Need to establish a formal network with influential decision makers and is highly regarded as an expert within both the internal and external communities.

Your Skills & Abilities:​ (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent operations experience
  • 10+ Years of experience in automotive manufacturing industry
  • 5+ years of experience in Industrial Engineering and/or manufacturing operations leadership (people leader role)
  • Proficiency in IE tools and processes such as APS, STDS, GWB, TBIA, line balance methodology, waste elimination/CIP workshops, ergonomics, and cost studies.
  • In depth knowledge of IE metrics and their relationship to performance (e.g., BEC, MPH, %VA, %OS, NWR, Net-Net, manpower utilization, AHPU, WHPU) and the levers that drive MEI and Manufacturing Scorecards.
  • Demonstrated track record of measurable results
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, change management, and communication capability across cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Solid organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Proficient in using MS Office suite of tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project) to produce professional written communication, such as reports, presentations, and correspondence

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in engineering/business administration
  • Advanced data analytics and dashboard experience (e.g., Power BI) including data governance and AI applications.
