IBM i Systems Administrator
Job Description
The IBM i Systems Administrator will be responsible for management,
administration, and maintenance of all the power systems and external
storage within set constraints and react appropriately to situations. The ideal
candidate will have a background in the installation, design, and
administration of IBM i Power System and External Storage. The IBM i
Systems Administrator will also be required to utilize industry standard tools
to report performance statistics to software engineers and the business and
pinpoint effects of new design elements for application optimization and to
create baseline performance metrics and determine effects of code
optimization and technology implementations.
Key Responsibilities:
● Administer and maintain IBM i Power systems, including DR systems
and external storage.
● Set system performance thresholds and monitor enterprise-level Power
systems to maintain performance levels that meet business needs.
● Manage i OS jobs and system messages.
● Control job environment through adjustment of system resources and
subsystems.
● Perform backup and restore operations using BRMS.
● Manage system and user security.
● Coordinate system modifications (upgrades, etc) with other groups,
such as Engineering, Networking, Customer Support, and Product, to
deliver optimum solutions for the business.
● Identify effects of new product offerings on infrastructure and propose
design ideas.
● Research latest Power technology developments in order to design,
spec, and implement the latest and best available technologies.
● Automate monitoring tasks (functional and performance) - Lead skill
building efforts for IBM i and external storage.
● Provide metrics on system performance to clients.
● 24x7 coverage is sometimes required.
Qualifications
Must have Skills: BRMS (Backup recovery and media services), CL
programming skill, IBM I performance management.
Good To Have Skills: Disaster Recovery(DR).
● 4+ years as administrator, or experience administering 5 or more large
production partitions.
● Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks.
● Ability to react quickly and appropriately to high pressure / high impact
situations and determine the best solution.
● Ability to take the lead, as appropriate.
● Ability to maintain good customer support.
● Experience monitoring production enterprise systems.
● Experience proactively planning for system growth.
● Strong written and verbal communication
