As an HVAC Mechanic, you will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and modifying heating and air-handling equipment to provide efficient operation of HVAC systems within prescribed safety limits and in according with appropriate codes. Your work will ensure the safety and comfort of airport users, staff, and tenants.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Troubleshoots problems with high-pressure boilers and related equipment; performs major repairs, as needed.
Uses schematics and drawings in rebuilding heat and chilled-water valves and calibrating to manufacturers' specifications.
Repairs or replaces HVAC equipment and components, including blower motors, timers, switches, electrical controls, and seals. Cuts, threads, and replaces or reroutes pipes. Installs duct work and diffusers.
May recommend modification to the design of equipment for improved operations.
Performs preventive maintenance.
Responds to trouble calls and troubleshoots malfunctioning HVAC equipment. May revise set points on energy management software.
May operate high-pressure boilers and 2000-ton chillers; makes adjustments as required or takes the unit off line.
May test water at the pump station for chlorine level; operates pumps and switches water flow from Fairfax County water to reservoir water and vice versa. May be assigned as backup for the water testing and treatment program.
With Air Conditioning Mechanics, maintains or repair thermal ice storage systems, chillers, window air conditioners, water coolers, roof-top heat pumps, and refrigeration equipment.
Maintains a clean work area and paints equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Five years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment.
Knowledge of the theories and principles of heating and ventilating, and the ability to recognize abnormal conditions and make adjustments or repairs.
Knowledge of air-conditioning and the mechanical operation of HVAC equipment, and the ability to troubleshoot problems and make adjustments or repairs.
Knowledge of how HVAC units, return air, and mixed-air fans work together and skill in restoring regulated temperatures in specific areas.
Skill in using hand and powered tools and equipment of the trade in repairing HVAC systems.
Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).
Skill in using energy management software to revise set points for the automatic operation of equipment at new ranges.
Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures to do so.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer, computerized work order, and time and attendance system.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed as a Journey-level HVAC Mechanic.
Universal Certification (Section 608) to service HVAC/refrigeration equipment from the Environmental Protection Agency.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A state driver’s license in good standing.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 50 pounds). May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in a cramped position.
May be subject to potential hazards common to the HVAC trades, such as high-pressure boilers, compressors, and large fans; hazardous substances; possible burns and scalds; falls; and gas leaks. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.
Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies, such as snow removal
A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
