As a member of the Victorian Road Maintenance Contracts (VRMC) team, the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager oversees and implements and manages all safety aspects of the HSEQ Management System Framework fostering a strong safety culture aligned with company values. Key duties include overseeing HSE policies, managing critical risk programs, ensuring compliance with safety plans, and delivering safety inductions and training.

Reporting to the Contract Manager, the SHE Manager works within the Transport business unit, and is based at the VRMC Primary Depot in Clayton with daily travel in the South-Central Metropolitan region (Tool of Trade – Vehicle provided).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist HSE advice to operational leaders, ensuring alignment with Service Stream’s safety vision and policies.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing safety team, establishing clear performance expectations and professional development plans.
  • Collaboratively work with the Business Leaders, the Victorian Department of Transport and project key stakeholders to facilitate the management of safety related risks and the implantation of effective controls.  
  • Conduct site visits and field leadership activities to ensure visibility and adherence to safety standards.
  • Oversee risk management processes, including safety compliance, hazard identification, and corrective action implementation.
  • Manage incident investigations and ensuring timely reporting.
  • Drive continuous improvement through audits, inspections, and safety management system enhancements.
  • Coaching of Operational Staff in relation to their safety management obligations.

About You:

  • At least five years’ full-time experience as a safety professional in road maintenance and/or construction safety
  • Proven experience in engaging and liaising with front line staff and supervisors/managers, senior managers, industry specialists, clients and regulatory authorities
  • Strong working knowledge of legislation, standards, codes of practice, and ISO Standards 45001, 14001, 9001; and the Office of the federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) Accreditation.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft suite of programs
  • Minimum Cert IV and preferably tertiary qualification in OHS Management
