Job Summary: This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Healthcare System (VANJHCS), East Orange/Lyons Campus, Environmental Management Service (EMS). The incumbent will rotate every year between East Orange and Lyons Campus.

Major Duties:

  • Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Incumbent is responsible for the supervision of housekeepers. The incumbent performs the following duties: Supervision: Appraises and evaluates work performance Inspects areas to assure cleanliness and antiseptic protocols are met and in accordance to the area cleaned Schedules staff for day and evening shifts, including weekends to assure coverage Initiates disciplinary actions when necessary Conduct disciplinary investigations Approves leave Recommends staff members for awards Writes or alters positions descriptions Assigns and re-distributes work based on workload needs Provides guidance to subordinate staff relating to protocol and problems experienced Administration: Contributes to policies and assists in resolving endemic problems experienced in the Service Participates on committees Oversees and initiates the ordering of equipment Inspects equipment and oversees it is maintained according to policy Prepares and submits various reports related to work assignments and inspection outcomes Performs other related duties as assigned. Planning Incumbent plans daily, weekly, and monthly work schedules and assignments for employees supervised. Establishes deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules, methods, and procedures of the team. Determines how many assignments can be done concurrently or which must be delayed, the number of employees necessary to accomplish the work, and the availability of machinery, materials, and associated equipment needed. Schedules work and reassigns personnel to meet emergency situations (e.g., excessive absenteeism, unexpected resignations, or unusual situations which occur in the Medical Center, Page 2 of 4 such as flooding due to plumbing fixtures, and problems occurring daily due to the Medical Center physical condition). Determines proper methods, materials, personnel requirements, and time estimates necessary to ensure that cleaning and sanitation standards are met in assigned area. Decides on the best method of coping with emergencies in so far as materials, equipment, and personnel are concerned. Work Direction Incumbent has full supervisory responsibility for work operations and is accountable for the quality and quantity of work performed. Assigns employees to tasks as required, and instructs them in any changes in routine work assignments or methods. Conducts inspections of work while in progress and after completion to assure that all regulations are adhered to and all objectives have been met. Provides on-the-job training of all employees assigned to section in cleaning methods; use of various cleaning compounds, germicides, disinfectants, etc., and the proper mixing of these solutions; the use and care of scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, etc., isolation techniques and control of bacterial cross-infection. Participates in formal training classes by providing classroom instruction on environmental sanitation issues. Based on a continuing observance of employees, makes suggestions to General Foreman regarding the need for a review or revision of techniques involved in cleaning and maintenance schedules. Administration Incumbent receives general instructions from the Foreman regarding work assignments, and effectively transmits these instructions to his/her subordinates, in a clear manner, to preclude any confusion in job performance. Approves leave requests and recommends conversion of probationary employees. Sets performance for subordinates and provides formal appraisals of work performance. Initiates recommendations for promotion or reassignment of subordinates. Counsels employees, adjusts informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and union representatives. Initiates disciplinary actions as needed. Provides updates during daily conferences on progress made on work assignments and projects. Submits written sanitation inspection reports periodically. Incumbent possesses software knowledge and skills in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
