Basic Requirements: Candidates who do not meet one of the basic requirements listed below by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. Degree: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience: Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -AND- In addition to the Basic Requirements as listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; professional work involving the care of a historic orchard and surrounding historic landscape; propagation and cultivation of a variety of trees including planting, grafting, pruning, transplanting; caring for very old trees; providing public information concerning historic landscapes; independently performing a wide range of orchard, field, gardening work using various hand and mechanical tools and equipment. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a major such as botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, and/or horticulture. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed graduate-level education semester hours of education (that are in excess of 18 semester hours) by 18. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only graduate-level education in excess of one-year may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
