Position Overview:

Facilitates data and patient information for clinical evaluation by the pharmacist. Provides timely preparation and distribution of medications, IV solutions and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, for subsequent administration to the patient. Provides clinical function assistance to the Pharmacist and all clinical function contributions will be provided under the supervision of the Pharmacist responsible for that individual patient care, clinical process or medication quality review, as assigned. May provide orientation and training of new technicians, clerks or student; education training of technicians and Pharmacy Interns to the proficient use of the PharmMed system; education training of staff to the AmerisourceBergen system; accurately perform order entry and Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) orders

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program
  • OR Met Board of Pharmacy requirements to obtain registration


CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

  • PHRMTECHR-Registered Pharmacy Technician by California Board of Pharmacy
  • OR PHARMC-Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • OR PHARMT-Pharmacy Technician
  • OR PHARMI-Pharmacy Intern


TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years recent relevant experience


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Technical knowledge of medication therapeutic classes, lab value monitoring including value ranges and adverse value implications.
  • Technical knowledge of drug utilization evaluations, medication side effects, medical charts and information location.
  • Knowledge of pharmacoeconomic principles and applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician in relationship to other Pharmacy personnel and knowledge of standards and ethics, laws and regulations governing the practice of Pharmacy
  • Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing and record keeping of medications
  • Knowledge of and the ability to carry out calculations required for common dosage determination, employing both the metric and apothecary systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of the identification of drugs, drug dosages, routes of administration, dosage forms and storage requirements
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform the manipulative and record keeping functions involved in and related to dispensing prescriptions
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform procedures and techniques relating to manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products
  • Knowledge of and ability to accurately read, interpret and enter physician orders
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to deal with a challenging work environment from time demands and conflicting priorities.
  • Maintain a positive and professional image and demonstrate self-directed learning to meet professional development and/or license requirements.
  • Ability to operate computers and typewriters accurately, performance of sterile parenteral procedures using proper aseptic technique, including use of vertical and horizontal airflow hoods and bio-safety cabinets, ability to safely and accurately operate various pumps and compounding machines, proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues, conflict with or among others, respectively direct and reinforce staff efforts; effectively plan and organize and prioritize work, and to effectively solve unique problems as they arise or identify when to consult supervisor.
  • Knowledge of equipment use such as Baxa Syringe Filling Pump, vertical/horizontal laminar air flow hoods, and Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies.

Pay Range is $36.30 to $45.38 / hour

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is only one component of Sutter Health’s comprehensive total rewards program. Eligible positions also include a comprehensive benefits package.
