ZEISS Microoptics is a unit within the strategic business area Photonics & Optics and specializes in the development, optimization, mastering, replication, and integration of optical applications based on micro-optical and holographic optical elements. We develop and manufacture holographic and micro-optical solutions for established industries as well as for complex research and space projects, while simultaneously driving scale-up in the automotive and aerospace sectors.
Shape the next generation of holographic display solutions – from optical system concepts to fully functional customer prototypes.
In this role, you will combine deep optical design expertise with hands-on laboratory work, bringing innovative display concepts into real-world applications – in close collaboration with international customers and interdisciplinary development teams.
Your Role
You bring your designs to life: build, align, and optimize experimental setups and prototypes in the lab
You validate your solutions through feasibility studies, measurements, and testing – both internally and directly at customer sites
You select suitable optical, electronic, and mechanical components and integrate them into fully functional systems
You define product requirements and specifications together with customers and internal stakeholders
You collaborate closely with optics design, electronics, software, and manufacturing to develop robust and scalable solutions
You represent projects externally – through customer visits, demonstrators, and international events
Your Profile
Degree in Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field
Experience in optical system development / optical design (e.g., wave optics, diffractive optics, laser or display optics)
Strong motivation to bring designs into practice in a laboratory environment (e.g., setup, alignment)
Ideally, knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
Holography / diffractive optics / wave optics
Display technologies (e.g., LCD, OLED, µLED, LCoS)
Image processing, rendering, or computer-generated holography
Willingness to travel (approx. 15–20%) and openness to international collaboration and customer interaction
Structured, solution-oriented, and pragmatic working style combined with a strong drive for innovation
Excellent German and English communication skills (written and spoken), with a confident presence in customer and trade fair environments
The opportunity to work on cutting-edge holographic technologies with a direct path to real-world applications
The chance to accompany developments from prototype stage through to customer solutions
Close collaboration within a highly skilled, interdisciplinary technical environment
Individual development opportunities – both professionally and personally
Modern working conditions with flexible working hours and hybrid work options
