Summary: Prepares surgical and autopsy specimens for gross and microscopic examination. Assists pathologists with special procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs both routine and complex histologic techniques such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization and immunofluorescence on tissue samples
- Assists pathologists with surgical and frozen specimens
- Assists in fine needle aspirations
- Operates and troubleshoots departmental automation
- Assists in maintaining inventory at appropriate levels
- Accessions specimen upon arrival in Histology laboratory
- Promotes a clean and safe environment of care, utilizing the SAFE error prevention habits
- Provides the highest standard of privacy and confidentiality in matters involving patients, coworkers, and the hospital by abiding by the Standards of Conduct
- Knowledgeable in areas of pathology, education and regulations that impact histotechnology
- Other duties as assigned that pertain to proper functioning of the histology lab
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required, please refer to eligibility criteria below for additional details:
- Histotechnologist, HTL (ASCP) or eligible. To be eligible for the HTL (ASCP) exam, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Route 1: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter Route hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree, AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program within the last five years.
- Route 2: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, OR a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained withing, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree, AND one year of full time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years OR one year of full time acceptable veterinary, industry or research experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S. or Canada within the last five years.
- Route 3: Valid HT(AXCP) certification, AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, AND six months of full time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years OR six months of full-time acceptable veterinary, industry or research experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S. or Canada within the last five years.
- Route 4: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree, AND successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military histotechnician training course within the last ten years.
