The UHealth Laboratory/Pathology Department at UHealth/University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Lead Histotechnologist to work at the UTower Hospital.

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                    

The Histotechnologist - Lead oversees the performance of proper collection, grossing, processing, and embedding of routine/non-routine specimens and specimens submitted for electron microscopy as well as a wide variety of routine, histochemical, and immunohistochemical stains (IHC) on surgical tissue specimens for use in treatment and / or diagnosis of disease. The incumbent participates and facilitates patient data accessioning via use of the laboratory information system (LIS), quality control, quality assurance, instrument maintenance, instrument troubleshooting, and technical validations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

  • Prepare routine and non-routine surgical specimens for morphological and immunohistochemical (IHC, ISH, IF) microscopic analyses by pathologist(s) in accordance to established policies and standard operating procedures in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Maintains records of prepared specimens and cross checks all labels and patient documentation. Verifies identification of specimen with pathologist’s orders, prepares specimens for testing, and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.

  • Conduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.

  • Recognizes factors that affect all steps of specimen processing and recognizes critical, abnormal, and unacceptable results during each step.

  • Follows-up according to established protocols.

  • Operates and maintains equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform preventative maintenance, verifications, and calibrations as applicable.

  • Troubleshoot minor equipment failures and document remedial actions (e.g., repairs or repeated tests).

  • Performs, verifies, and records quality control testing according to procedure.

  • Ensures all quality control and quality assurance standards are met.

  • Identifies problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and acts as outlined by established protocols.

  • Uses reagents and supplies in a cost-effective manner; monitors and maintains an appropriate supply inventory.

  • Places supply inventory orders as needed.

  • Follows all safety precautions and regulatory rules to safeguard patient confidentiality. Provides training and guidance to new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

  • Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

  • Certification and Licensing:

               Current Florida Medical Technologist License Histotechnologist

  • Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

  • Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Specific Functions

Lead Histotechnologist

A. Leadership and Oversight:

Oversee daily operations and workflow of the histology laboratory. Assign and prioritize work to ensure timely turnaround. Serve as technical resource and mentor for all histotechnologist levels.

B. Quality Assurance and Control:

Slides and blocks for overall quality, consistency, and completeness. Monitor compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional standards. Maintain QC documentation and participate in audits.

C. Compliance:

Ensure adherence to all laboratory safety and regulatory standards. Assist Management in internal audits Collect laboratory metrics for Lab Management
