Under the general supervision of the Histology Supervisor using established policies and procedures, performs a variety of tasks associated with the preparation of surgical, biopsy, and autopsy specimens for study. Maintains QC and other records in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1) Embeds surgical, biopsy and autopsy specimens insuring proper orientation. Tissue types are identified using computer generated logs.

2) Microtomy. Produces high quality sections – quantity meets Department standards.

3) H&E staining and routine special stains. Completes high quality stains, with appropriate controls, within the

approved time frame.

4) Uses the computer system to move the workload through the lab.

§ Ensures block-numbering accuracy. Follows up discrepancies appropriately.

§ Compiles and prints logs at appropriate times.

§ Verifies stains and procedures when completed.

§ Notifies appropriate personnel of unresolved problems. Documents all corrective actions in the QC log.

5) Performs non-routine procedures (Immunohistochemistry, muscle stains). Produces high quality stains with

appropriate controls in approved time frames.

6) Makes necessary stains and reagents. Insures proper levels are available.

7) Performs and documents all basic maintenance at scheduled intervals.

8) Maintains an orderly, hygienic work area by cleaning workspaces on a daily basis.

9) Handles chemical, infectious material/waste and other material/waste according to Department and Clinic policies

and procedures. Participates in waste reduction efforts through involvement in the Department’s recycling activities.

§ Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent plus additional training required for attainment of registration.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: HT ASCP registration preferred.

Additional Qualifications Required for Biopsy Processing: Candidates who will perform grossing or process simple biopsies must also meet one of the following education and training criteria:

1) An earned associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution

OR

2) Education/training equivalent to the above that includes:

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours chemistry, 6 hours biology, and 12 hours of chemistry/biology/medical laboratory technology in any combination), AND
  • Laboratory training through either a clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES, NAACLS, or other HHS-approved organization, OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty performing high complexity testing

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

§ Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform complex tests and accurately produce results that meet criteria required by CAP, JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.

§ Analytic ability to perform complex tests, to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, etc. Including processing schedules, routine and special stain preparation and Q.A., equipment maintenance.

§ Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to effect corrective action procedures and modifications.

Experience: Minimum two years full time experience in a hospital histology lab.

 

 

Pay Range:

$40.00 - $53.83

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
