Job Summary:
Collects and prepares specimens for testing procedures.  Prepares, embeds, cuts and stains microscopic slides from surgery and autopsy specimens for examinations under the supervision of a Senior Technologist.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs and evaluates other histological procedures.
  • Prepare microscope slides from surgical and autopsy material, embedding, cutting and staining
  • Performs and evaluates other Histo. Procedures
  • Performs and maintains  adequate specimen records
  • Preparation and evaluation of routine and special stains
  • Filing of slides and paraffin blocks
  • Prepares slides for immunoperoxidase stains
  • Assists in renal biopsy procedures
  • Recording of blocks, slides and stains
  • Maintains work area
  • Organizes work effectively

  • Processes frozen sections from surgical and autopsy material.
  • Processes frozen sections from surgical and autopsy material.
  • Prepare, cut and stain frozen sections
  • Assists Pathologist in gross pathology examination of surgical specimens, collection of specimens as needed.
  • Assists in specimen collection as needed
  • Assists Pathologist in gross pathology exams of surgical specimens
  • Participates in QA activities, appropriate continuing education programs
  • Participates in at least minimum continued education requirements
  • Participates in supply management of section
  • Participates in QC/QA functions for histological procedure
  • Record / maintain QC records
  • Helps to maintain chemical inventory and storage of chemicals needed for section and lab.  Prepares solutions and stains for processing and follows safety procedures.
  • Prepares solutions and special stains
  • Supports and maintains a positive work environment following all hospital and department policies
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Utilizes proper safety equipment
  • Maintains equipment, knowledgeable of LIS system.

Certification Required:

Certification as Histologic Technician by ASCP Board or eligible. Must obtain within six months from date of hire.


Education Required:

Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate.  Must have successfully completed an approved program in histological technique or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Must be able to work under intense mental concentration or stress and utilize good judgment when making decisions.  Job duties are such that quality of patient care is directly dependent upon correct performance.  Must be able to accept other than routine scheduled shifts as departmental need requires. 


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer and hard copy materials.  Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours).  Must be able to comprehend and learn operation of various office equipment.  Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60# specific to job evaluation.  Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics. Must be able to lift up to 10# specific to job evaluation.
