Work Schedule: M-F, weekends once training is complete. Start times vary 4am-8am depending on training needs.

Process, embed, cut and stain tissue sections under the direction of a histology technician or histotechnologist to practice techniques.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Learn required information by reading and studying histology guides and textbooks, utilizing section personnel as resources, and by completing assignments and tests.

  • Study assignments are completed on time as directly observed.
  • Test scores are passing.
  • Use prioritization skills in completing assignments.

Process, embed, cut and stain tissue sections (i.e. autopsy, surgical) under the direction of a histology technician or histotechnologist to practice techniques and assist with the workload by following section policies and procedures.

No occurrence when a block is exhausted unless directed by a pathologist to do so.

  • No major errors as directly observed.
  • Routine H&E stains meet quality standards.
  • No unaccecptable quality of slide preparation.
  • Uses prioritization skills in completing work assignments.
  • Compliant with PPE guidelines 100% of the time.

Prepare reagents, stains and solutions necessary for processing and staining by following section procedures.

  • No occurrence when improperly prepared stains result in a major error.
  • No more than 2 occurrences when a stain needs to be repeated.
  • Routine maintenance is completed and documented 100% of the time.
  • Compliant with PPE guidelines 100% of the time.

Prepare antibodies and solutions necessary for processing and staining immunohistochemical slides by following section procedure.

  • No occurrence when improperly prepared stains result in a major error.
  • No more than 2 occurrences when a stain needs to be repeated.
  • Prioritize workload to complete work assignments.
  • Compliant with PPE guidelines 100% of the time.

Perform and record quality control and preventative maintenance procedures and notify histology technician, histotechnologist or team leader of variations promptly to assure instruments, stains, and procedures are operating within acceptable standards by following section policies and procedures.

  • Quality control is completed and documented per schedule 100% of the time by review of QC records.
  • Preventative maintenance is performed and documented per schedule 100% of the time by review of the records.

Label slides and file slides and blocks per section policy.

  • No major errors as directly observed.
  • Slides and blocks are available and easily retrieved by direct observation.
  • Filing is completed during rotation as directly observed.
  • Slides and/or blocks that are pulled are appropriately recorded as directly observed.

Participate as a team member to facilitate the efficiency and effectiveness of the section utilizing interpersonal skills in communication, cooperation and assisting coworkers in all areas.

  • Appropriate communication skill as directly observed.
  • Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner.
  • Trainee brings issues of concern directly to supervisor’s attention.
  • Accomodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties and schedules.

Education

  • HT: At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry(must include credit hours in both)
  • OR
  • HTL: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)
