Job Summary:

The Histology Technician prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists under the direct supervision of a pathologist or histology technologist. This individual is responsible for frozen sections, paraffin mounts, cytologic preparations and stains related to each function. The Histology Technician determines if surgical and cytology specimens are adequate and requests additional specimens if necessary. He/she performs routine maintenance on instruments as directed.


Major Responsibilities:

Performs quality work.

Determines if specimens are adequate and requests additional specimens if necessary. Properly identifies all tissue and cytology specimens.
Prepares tissue samples with proper orientation in blocks. Performs routine and special stains of tissue samples.
Performs and documents quality control for staining procedures. Performs and documents routine maintenance of instruments. Demonstrates the ability to prepare quality slides from tissue blocks.
Follows all Joint Commission, State of Georgia and other regulatory guidelines and standards.
Displays a sense of cooperation in daily work relationships. Adapts well to change.
Modifies work schedule as needed.
Submits earned time request according to policy.
Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.

Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with lab staff, nursing and medical staff. Assists co-workers.
Demonstrates a courteous, professional demeanor.
Maintains a high level of productivity.

Effectively uses allotted time and resources.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

​​​​​​​​​Registered Histology Technician ASCP or equivalent, or eligible 


Education Required:

​​​​​High School Diploma or Equivalent  


Experience Required:

​Minimum one year in histopathology (with Associate’s Degree) 
Minimum two year in histopathology (with High School Diploma or Equivalent)   


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

​​​​​Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries weight up to 50 pounds. Ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols with vision and hearing within normal range to respond to Code alerts and equipment alarms. Work-related stress due to volume and time constraints with irregular working hours.


Preferred Job Requirements:

Associate’s Degree in Biology or related field
