Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Previous Release of Information experience and/or RHIT/RHIA certification preferred, minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in HIM Field.
Experience / Qualifications: RHIT/RHIA certification a plus and/or 1-2 years of previous Release of Information experience. Experience in HIM field with Electronic Medical Record systems, specifically information related to processing release of information requests. Cerner, EPIC, PACS and RIS experience a plus, must have strong knowledge of MS Word and Excel. Good strong understanding of HIM records processing, workflow, and Electronic Medical Records. Knowledge of Florida Statutes, HIPAA Hi-tech, and other laws and regulations a must. Strong analytic, and computer skills. Must also have good communication and organizational skills.
Position Summary
The HIM Release of Information Specialist is responsible for processing patient, attorney, insurance and other regulatory requests for medical record and imaging copies within 5-7 days as required by the state of Florida.
Responsibilities include:
Answer incoming department calls, takes messages and/or routes calls appropriately. Responsible for processing Release of Information (ROI) requests for hospital and physician practices to include patient care, legal, subpoena’s, insurance requests, etc. by paper and/or digital formats to include CD/DVDs via burner. Monitor work queues in various applications to ensure required turnaround time is met per Florida Statutes (such as Ambra, EMR patient portal incoming request queues, fax in queues, etc.). Issue invoices for medical record and imaging copy fees associated with ROI requests. Work with key individuals in hospital and physician offices to answer any ROI questions or discrepancies. Coordination/reconciliation of documents in legal medical record to ensure proper indexing and maintenance of the legal medical record is achieved. Ensure HIPAA Amendment Requests are routed to HIM Record Integrity Specialist. Coordination/reconciliation of documents in legal medical record to ensure proper indexing and record maintenance is achieved. Assist with prepping and scanning of loose reports and documents when time permits. Other duties as assigned. Report urgent issues to HIM Manager/Director and provide weekly turnaround time (TAT) reports to for compliance monitoring.

Office -2 Grip dynamometer 10 seconds/10lbs; pinch thumb and forefinger 10 seconds/2lbs; rotate wrist with 10 lb. weight; flex and extend elbow with 10lb weight; raise shoulder 135 degrees forward and shrug shoulders with 10lb weight; squat; kneel on single knee; push and pull stationary cart with force of 40lbs; carry 10lb weight 30 feet; lift 20lb weight floor to table/table to floor; and lift 10lb weight table to shoulder height.
Threshold Requirements
These threshold requirements are required and completed yearly basis. Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation. TB/PPD Surveillance Program. Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s)
