Job Summary: You will serve as a High Voltage Electrician in the Public Works Office of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Major Duties:

  • You will Install, modify, and replace generation and distribution equipment in substations, power-generating facilities, transformer vaults, and/or distribution centers.
  • You will maintain, replace, test and reset circuit breakers in switch and substations at shore installations.
  • You will troubleshoot cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance, or cable breaks, using such common electrical test devices as voltmeter, ohmmeter, and megger.
  • You will work on overhead platforms to string overhead wires and set proper wire tension in accordance with strength and weight of wires.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Understanding of electrical principles, procedures, materials, and safety standards governing electrical systems from 480 to 69,000 volts; 2) Planning, carrying-out, troubleshooting, and repairing high voltage generating, controlling, and distribution systems such as repairing switch gear, installing and hooking up transformers, locating defects in cables, or selecting materials to make installations or repairs; 3) Understanding of circuit diagrams of interconnects such as the generators, buses, switches, and circuit breakers in a power-generating facility or the feeders, substations, transformers, and interconnections of a distribution system to diagnose problems; 4) Operating test equipment such as oscillators, meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment, and cable locating and fault finding equipment; and 5) Diagnosing and determining corrective action for electric power-controlling equipment such as switch gear, transformer banks, and circuit breakers in substations and power-generating facilities.
