Heavy Equipment Operator II

Hinton Landfill Full time

Summary

Responsible for operating heavy equipment and other vehicles for the purpose of excavating, processing, compacting substances on a daily basis.  Also, responsible for the efficient operation and care of assigned equipment.  This position will normally operate a bulldozer, compactor, or excavator in addition to water truck, dump truck, roll-off truck at the landfill site. 
 

Pay Range: $19.92 - $24.95 ( Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the functionality, appearance and safety of the work area or facilities in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

  • Excavate and haul cover materials for construction.

  • Build, grade and clean roads and parking areas to maintain appearance and safety.

  • Build run on/ run off beams to control water runoff.

  • Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.

  • Perform pre-trip/ post-trip vehicle inspections and complete daily work sheet for equipment operated.

  • Keep work location and vehicle in order.

  • Resolve customer inquiries.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • 2 years related experience with a variety of solid waste and other automotive equipment

  • Class C Texas driver’s license

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more several times daily

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:     

  • Six months additional training past the high school level

  • 2-4 years experience with a variety of heavy earth moving or automotive equipment

  • Class A TCEQ Municipal Solid Waste license or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of safety standard practices governing the operation of vehicles

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, operation, and servicing of heavy equipment

  • Skill to operate controls for required equipment

  • Ability to properly use, operate and care for tools, equipment, and materials

  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment

  • Ability to read and understand operator’s manual

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • Completion of a defensive driving course
     

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works primarily in a vehicle; with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.  Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.  8-10 hours drive time on a daily basis in all weather conditions.  Must possess sufficient vision to accurately read written and typed documents.
