As a Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Epidemiologist II, you will work closely with the HAI surveillance team on HAI/AR surveillance activities within the Division of Epidemiology and Informatics. In this role, you will conduct complex HAI outbreak investigations, coordinate with external partners, analyze data, direct and assist in preparing HAI reports, monitor multi-drug-resistant organism (MDRO) trends, interpret MDRO data to develop evidence-based HAI protocols, and implement HAI prevention/response strategies and control measures throughout Maricopa County.

We Require
Two years of experience performing epidemiological or statistical analysis
Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related public health field
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
A public health degree from an academically accredited college or university, as recognized by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)
Programming experience in SAS, R, or a similar statistical software program
Experience conducting disease surveillance activities and managing analytical projects
Experience with case or outbreak investigation
Job Contributions
Uses public health surveillance systems to monitor conditions of public health concern and detect events that require additional investigation and follow-up, particularly for HAI-related cluster detection
Conducts epidemiological investigations with patients and healthcare providers to gather health information using County-supported public health surveillance systems
Recommends, implements, and supports public health interventions that contribute to the mitigation of a threat, hazard, risk, or incident, and monitors intervention effectiveness
Provides County public health guidance and education to support community members and partners
Manages datasets and monitors data quality according to MCDPH protocols
Uses statistical software, such as SAS or R, to analyze public health data and produces summary reports with descriptive statistics and trend data for surveillance purposes
Fulfills basic data requests and produces epidemiological reports for internal and external stakeholders
Coordinates logistics for response and prevention screenings between healthcare facilities, state partners, and public health labs
Utilizes existing MCDPH protocols and provides feedback on opportunities for process improvement
Collaborates with local, state, regional, and national-level partners to maintain and improve public health surveillance systems, data quality, and situational awareness
Exchanges health-related information and situational awareness reports with federal, state, local, and tribal levels of government and the private sector to support public health emergency preparedness capabilities
Participates in emergency preparedness exercises, contributes to enhanced surveillance activities, and responds to incidents of public health significance, as assigned
Working Conditions
Position is primarily office-based with extensive computer work using various moderately complex databases and working under stressful conditions related to death and disease
Must be able to work on-call periodically, and strict adherence to confidentiality policies is required
Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire
Position requires traveling to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding use of County or private vehicles on County business
Ability to exert up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time
Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency
Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
