Job Summary: The VA New Jersey Healthcare system is currently recruiting for one Health Technician Position located within our Spinal Cord Injury unit. The Health Technician performs a range of clerical, technical, administrative, patient care, and general clinic support functions within a general acute care setting.

Major Duties:

  • These tasks are not all inclusive and require the demonstration of appropriate training. The incumbent may assist with or perform other related approved technical health care procedures under the direction and supervision of the licensed personnel as competency is demonstrated and documented conditions that may impact the patient's health status. The incumbent will complete approved templates and tools, such as the outpatient intake form, normal result notes, and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency. Clinical Duties: Operates and supports providers and Registered Nurses in designated clinical area using diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments/equipment including Electrocardiogram, Spirometry, Visual Acuity Screening, and Bladder scan according to established procedures and with documented competency. Locates and sets up equipment needed for complex diagnostic procedures. Operates, calibrates, and maintains medical instruments or equipment. Monitors and plans equipment inventory, routine equipment maintenance, and serves as a unit resource for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of non-critical, semi-critical, and critical Reusable Medical Devices. Demonstrates leadership in advocating patient safety and educate multidisciplinary staff in assigned area on RMD. Supports health and medical staff during diagnosis and treatment of patients. Gathers screening data on patients admitted to the hospital to include fall risk, allergies, current medications, homelessness, abuse, means and mode of arrival, danger to self or others, and exposure to communicable diseases. Continued Clinical Activities: The HT assists doctors and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs and positioning the patient, or by performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests per policy. The HT obtains and records measurements and vital signs and then reports deviations in vital signs and/or weight to the RN or provider. As directed by an RN, the HT performs routine diagnostic tests such as venipuncture, electrocardiogram, bladder scans, visual acuity screening appropriate for assigned clinical areas and demonstrated competency. Care and treatment of patients with critical and emergent conditions. The HT assists nurses and physicians in the care and treatment of critically ill and emergent patients. The HT observes and reports to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints, and appearance. The HT reports observations of the condition of acute or chronic phase patients such as excessive vomiting, bleeding, type and amount of drainage, deviation in pulse, color, respiration, temperature, blood pressure, skin integrity, patency of airway, changes in wounds and reaction to treatments per protocol. The HT performs TMO monitoring for up to 12 patients simultaneously. Personal Patient Care: The HT performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient including transporting patients via wheelchair or gurney, and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance to various areas within the hospital including clinics, diagnostic areas, and treatment areas. The HT performs simple personal care duties such as bathing and demonstrates nursing standards for patient hygiene including bathing, oral, nail, and hair care. The HT assists patients with toileting needs, providing incontinent care. The HT performs basic nursing care that requires knowledge of standardized procedures such as performance of active/passive range-of-motion activities, ensuring that catheters and oxygen cannula are maintained intact, etc. Work Schedule: To be discussed during interview. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as nurses, doctors, etc. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performs ongoing patient care duties in an inpatient and/or outpatient clinical setting preparing a variety of technical (clinical) and administrative tasks in support of clinic operations, to include provide extensive ancillary/diagnostic support services to primary care providers such as the completion of vital signs including pain assessments, completion of clinical reminders, obtaining preliminary medical history, providing order entry for provider's signature, input of electronic progress notes at time of care, exit interview input, appointment scheduling, consultation/completion status input, arranges for hospital admission, reports tests results to clinician, provides educational instruction for patients/family. NOTE: Such experience MUST be well represented in resume. Failure to do so will results in a Non-Qualification Determination. OR Education: Must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education directly related to the position with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
