Job Summary: The position of Health Technician provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities in the Emergency Department (ED) at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. The purpose of this position is to support the delivery of patient care.

Major Duties:

  • Duties includes but are not limited to the following: Initiates cardiac monitoring correctly, and is able to admit/discharge patients from monitoring system and print rhythm strips. Performs venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples as ordered according to VHA, Medical Center, ED, and Laboratory policy and procedures. Performs urine dipstick testing and properly reports the results to the physician and/or the RN and documents appropriately. Facilitates maintaining charts and patient tracking information board. Provides patient care tasks as delegated Orders, maintains, and stocks supplies for the unit. Attends and participates in in-services/training opportunities in order to plan quality patient care. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 07:30 - 4:00pm. . Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/25/2026. Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience: Do you possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) Specialized experience includes, Obtains, labels at the patient's bedside and sends laboratory specimens as ordered according to policy and procedure, Uses knowledge of human anatomy to provide first aid and patient care, Verbally reports and/or documents in the medical record observations of and the treatment given to the patient to insure accurate records and quality of patient care, using standard nomenclature and approved forms. Preferred Experience: Previous experience in acute care setting. Experience in caring for patients of varying ages with multiple chronic conditions. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is the GS-06. Physical Requirements: The work requires the HT to be mobile throughout the Emergency Department and medical center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderately heavy). The HT should be capable of prolonged standing/walking and be physically capable of pushing equipment, wheelchairs and patient stretchers. Proper lifting and body mechanics must be utilized at all times to prevent injury.
