Job Description

The Health and Safety Advisor supports the implementation and continuous improvement of health and safety systems across all stages of a large-scale linear construction project. This role focuses on monitoring the effectiveness of safety processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and assisting project teams in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support and promote Surrey-Langley Stations Project Occupational Health & Safety Management System, Construction Site Specific Safety Management Plan.
  • Conduct site-specific safety orientation to workers, owners and clients.
  • Training employees in fall protection, confined space entry, traffic protection, traffic control person, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response.
  • Coordinate training such as WHMIS, First Aid, Forklift, Propane etc.
  • Conduct workplace inspections and audits.
  • Conduct behavioral observation in the workplace.
  • Update Material Safety Data Sheets as required.
  • Develop workplace plans – such as emergency evacuations, fire emergency, traffic controls, fall protection.
  • Distribution of safety materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Safety presentations.
  • Promoting Project's safety system.
  • Participate as a management member of Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Conduct studies and analyze accident trends.
  • Inspects project facilities and recommends corrective actions.
  • Co-ordinate activities of site-safety coordinators.
  • Working with the Claims Administrator assists with workers compensation claims and associated activities.
  • Participate in the Development of return to work and modified work programs.
  • Support Accident/Incident investigations.
  • Mediate health and safety issues for resolution.
  • Liaise with Government agencies.
  • Prepare and assist with external safety audits.
  • Coordination of environmental issues.
  • Gather and provide statistical information to estimating for tender packages.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Competencies

·         Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience in the construction industry in a

Health and Safety role.

·         WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Attendant Level 3 is preferred.

·         Certification as a Construction Safety Officer (CSO) or equivalent.

·         National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is an asset.

·         Strong knowledge of WorkSafe BC legislation. 

·         Background in Training and/or Education and/or experience delivering

EHS Training programs to individuals and groups.

·         Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office

(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

·         Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy; excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·         Exceptional organizational and time management skills.

·         Excellent meeting and training facilitation.

·         Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driver's abstract. 

This role offers an annual base salary in the anticipated range of $98,000–$106,000 CAD, with compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
