The Position

Roche’s Small Molecules, Bio and Cell & Gene Therapy product portfolio requires shaping the manufacturing network of the future, driving global investments across different production sites. 

As an integral part of Pharma Technical Operations (PT), PT Global MSAT, Engineering and Sustainability (PTT)  plays a key role in seamlessly leading global Capex projects from planning through execution by providing strong project management, technical expertise and project performance on time and on budget. Proactive maintenance, facility fitness and equipment support for the manufacturing network are adding to the mandate of PTT being PT`s powerhouse for technical product health. 

As the Head of Technology Strategy and Standards, you serve as the chief architect of the future manufacturing technology landscape for Pharma Technical Operations (PT). This is a senior strategic leadership role responsible for integrating technological innovation with long-term asset management. You will lead a high-performing team of senior leaders—including the future Group Head of Asset Lifecycle Management and the Global Fleet Program Owner—to drive a "design one, build many" philosophy, ensuring unparalleled efficiencies and cross-site equivalency. You will bridge the gap between technical innovation and financial sustainability, shaping a network that meets Roche’s 2030 ambitions for cost savings and environmental targets.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the SVP of Global MSAT, Engineering and Sustainability, you hold accountability for the entire PT technology roadmap, technology selection and standards across the global Biologics Drug Substance (DS) and Drug Product (DP), Synthetic Molecule (SM) and Devices manufacturing network and you lead, coach, and develop a team of senior technical project leaders and directors , fostering a culture of high performance and inclusive leadership. 

  • Own and define the comprehensive PT technology roadmap for the global manufacturing network, covering both Small Molecule and Large Molecule (DS & DP), together with Devices, and oversee the screening, assessment, and selection of technological innovations, translating them into scalable network standards in close collaboration with Technical Development (PTD), PTT MSAT and engineering teams as well as the manufacturing site networks.

  • Build competitive intelligence by regular benchmarking, supplier relations and conference attendance to understand trends and directions across peer companies. 

  • Develop  new technologies to deliver significant improvements in product robustness, zero defects, and supply chain resilience towards industrialization.

  • Guide global Capex strategy by liaising with network strategy teams on future technology projects for upgrades, recapitalization, and new modalities.

  • Accountable for the development and execution of long-range strategic asset lifecycle plans for all manufacturing sites globally, directly supporting major CAPEX investment decisions.

  • Oversee the forecasting of 5-10 year operational costs, including depreciation, maintenance, and utilities, to maximize asset performance and reduce unnecessary downtime and minimise  environmental footprint.

  • Provide ultimate strategic direction and oversight for the "Fleet" concept, establishing a network of standardized manufacturing systems acting as the single point of accountability for all fleet equipment & systems.

Who you are

You have the ability to think proactively and strategically, delivering results in an ambiguous, complex global network with strong analytical ability to articulate business opportunities, optimize financial performance , and synthesize recommendations for executive leadership. You bring the following qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Bioengineering), Life Sciences, or a related technical field, PhD in a relevant scientific discipline or an MBA combined with technical education

  • 15+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, with a proven track record of leading senior teams and transforming business processes in a global setting.

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex technology roadmaps and multi-site operations, with specific expertise in technology industrialization in GMP settings for either small or large molecules. Experience in vendor sector is of advantage

  • Proven experience in asset lifecycle management

  • Proven ability to implement network-wide standardization strategies (e.g., Fleet programs) and manage rapid technical change in a highly regulated environment.
