 or

Manchester: £60,300 - £84,900

Hybrid working

Lead one of the most critical operational functions in UK education, shaping how millions of exam scripts are processed every year.

As the Head of Operational Processing, (internally known as Head of Electronic Script Processing (ESP)) you’ll take ownership of one of the highest‑stakes operational environments in UK education. This is the engine room behind GCSE and A‑Level delivery — a complex, time‑critical operation that processes millions of exam scripts each year.

You’ll lead the strategy, people, systems and performance across our core processing functions: Electronic Script Processing, Segmentation and Exam Entries. The Purpose of this role is to ensure every process is delivered accurately, safely and on time, while continuously improving how we plan, operate and innovate. As a regulated operation, compliance and Ofqual adherence to quality is of paramount importance.

This role calls for someone who thrives on scale, pace and accountability — and who wants their work to directly impact learners across the country and play a vital role in delivering in partnership with key stake holders the future state processing capability of this remit.

What’s in it for you

This is a career‑defining operational leadership role. You’ll lead an operation that scales to around 350 colleagues during peak periods, giving you space to influence culture, improve workflows and drive meaningful change.

You’ll work closely with senior leaders across Technology, HR, Finance, Supplier Management and Operations, shaping how teams plan and deliver each exam series. With strong autonomy and visibility, you’ll be at the centre of key operational decisions.

You’ll also join a culture that values continuous improvement, collaboration and operational excellence, giving you the freedom to innovate and raise the bar.

AQA benefits include a competitive pension (up to 18.5 percent combined contribution), Private Medical Insurance with BUPA, 25 days annual leave rising to 30 with service, plus 4 days office closure at the end of December. You’ll also have up to 5 volunteering days each year.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll oversee the full lifecycle of exam processing for both UK and international series. This includes leading internal keying functions, managing segmentation and entry processing, coordinating readiness and documentation, and ensuring every process meets regulatory, contractual and quality expectations.

A key part of your role will be orchestrating the intense summer peak — planning resources, forecasting demand and driving efficiencies without compromising accuracy. You’ll lead incident management, resolve escalations, analyse root causes and embed lessons learned into future series.

You will also own the operational documentation, training materials, SOPs and work instructions that keep the operation running smoothly, ensuring they are accurate, robust and reflective of a high‑performance processing culture.

Strategically, you’ll represent Operational Processing in various key stakeholder arenas, including product development discussions and senior forums, where your insight will help shape new processes, technologies and ways of working.

You’ll thrive in this role if you …

  • Have led large, fast‑paced operations with confidence.

  • Have managed multi‑site teams and maintained consistent delivery.

  • Use data to make sound decisions in regulated environments.

  • Build inclusive, high‑performing teams.

  • Stay steady and organised through peak periods.

  • Balance risks, timelines and quality under pressure.

  • Bring knowledge of scanning systems or workflow design (not essential).

  • Have a background in project management, continuous improvement or Lean methodologies.

  • Live near Milton Keynes or Manchester, can travel between sites and work flexibly in busy periods.
