The Head of Mascot Programming is a full-time position is responsible for performing as the Detroit Lions team Mascot, Roary, and overseeing all mascot-related programming including the scheduling of appearances and social media presence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Mascot position will have daily responsibilities including, without limitation, the following:
- Perform as Roary at ALL Detroit Lions home games and Lions tentpole events, including, but not limited to, Training Camp, NFL Draft, Cub Club events, Club-led football camps and clinics, school assemblies, sponsor events, and various Community Relations events (includes nights, both weekdays and weekends, and holidays)
- Schedule, coordinate and perform at external appearances including, but not limited to, private parties, parades, festivals, grand openings, etc. (includes nights, both weekdays and weekends, and holidays), ensuring adequate advanced communication with the external party, timely arrival, proper attire, and adherence to performance and brand guidelines
- Develop and take ownership of new mascot-focused programming that effectively grows the Roary and Detroit Lions brands while meeting established business objectives
- Preserve the identity of the mascot without deviating from established character including body language/mannerisms, attitude, and fan interaction.
- Uphold established brand standards for the mascot in live interactions as well as digital environments including web and social media
- Collaborate with game presentation staff for cohesive planning, preparation and staging assistance for all game day field timeouts and breaks involving Roary; partner promotions, on-field activations, team/player introductions, recognitions on field and around the stadium
- Work alongside game presentation department staff to coordinate Roary involvement in execution of halftime shows, national anthems, field flags, field banners, etc.
- Manage Roary’s calendar of events and maintain detailed records of all appearances made by performer
- Effectively manage the program and performer budget inclusive of revenue stream
- Manage Roary’s social media presence and accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.) and ideate social media content throughout the season that is appropriate with Roary’s brand
- Coordination with Marketing Department to manage costumes and props, including maintenance, cleaning, and repair as necessary, procure costumes and necessary materials for upcoming events. Costumes must be well-maintained, and employee must report any damages to appropriate supervisor
- Train and supervise assistant mascots or performers, as needed, providing guidance on performance techniques and portrayal in line with Roary’s character
- Promote the Detroit Lions in various media and sponsorship events/appearances
- Cooperate with all coaches, team members, game officials, and Detroit Lions employees in a professional manner
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Proficiency in Asana, Microsoft Office, Excel, social media platforms, and of applicable web tools and software

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre, Dance, Hospitality, Marketing, Business, Communications, Facility Management, or related field preferred
- 3-5 years of experience as a mascot at the collegiate level or with a professional sports team required
- 3-5 years of experience maintaining an entertainer/performer schedule and calendar required
- Prior experience dancing choreographed routines is preferred
- Prior experience performing in front of large audiences required
- Strong time management, punctuality, and organizational skills
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Ability to be energetic, enthusiastic, confident, comedic and outgoing
- Must be able to demonstrate an extreme level of enthusiasm, confidence in high-pressure, live show situations on a regular basis
- Ability to meet physical demands of mascot duties, including extended periods of time in costume performing high-energy movement, and maintaining performance stamina during appearances
- Must be able to safely and effectively perform mascot duties in the team’s standard mascot costume, which is designed to fit individuals approximately 5’10”-6’1” tall
- Must be able to travel and transport the costume to off-site appearances and community events as needed
- Ability to walk and move around stadiums and event spaces for extended periods of time
- Must possess a valid passport
- Ability to work non-traditional hours in non-traditional setting
- Must understand and practice “safe” performing
- Must work indoors and outside in a variety of weather conditions.
- May require work out of both the Ford Field and Meijer Performance Center
- Must have reliable means of transportation, a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and be willing to travel around the Metro Detroit area and beyond; to and from games, various rehearsal locations, and appearances
