Club Labs is the digital acceleration team for Automobile Club of Southern California, also known as, AAA. We are the team responsible for building intuitive customer experiences across the organization’s insurance, membership, financial, emergency roadside, and travel services. The Head of Engineering is responsible for ensuring the engineering team has what they need to maximize impact in delivering the product vision – defining and driving the engineering team strategy. Build and protect engineering execution – from planning through the rest of the product development process. Responsible for implementing product development process, developing engineering goals, managing monthly forecasts, managing products to maximize performance, managing product enhancements, and maintaining or reducing product costs. Partner with Information Systems for technology and applications support for the product(s). Negotiate and manage outside vendor contracts. Report findings and recommendations to senior management. Build and protect an engineering culture – ensuring that the team understands the importance of our core values, innovation, and collaboration. Develop a strong team of software engineers and QA – focusing on recruiting, training, and ongoing coaching.

Job Duties

  • Oversee all aspects of software analysis, design, development, testing, installation, and maintenance for application systems for an assigned unit/area.

  • Provide direction to the engineering team and integrate activities with other IT departments to ensure successful implementation and support of project efforts. Anticipate and identify issues inhibiting the attainment of project goals, and develop and implement corrective actions.

  • Work with multiple areas of the organization (including the product distribution channels, sales, operations, finance, etc.) to ensure the development, execution, establishment of goals, and success of all product line initiatives. Monitor, evaluate, and communicate to all areas including senior managers the progress against targeted goals and make corrections to attain assigned objectives. Build relationships with product managers, marketing, and sales to enable product development teams to more effectively prioritize requirements and delivery efforts.

  • Develop a strong team by focusing on recruiting, training, and ongoing coaching. Review and initiate appropriate salary increases, promotions, terminations, and other changes in employee status.

  • Build and protect a product culture, ensuring that the team understands the importance of our core values, innovation, and collaboration.

  • Facilitate open communication between the Club and outside vendors/business partners on issues such as market research, development, complaints, advertising compliance, and service quality.

  • Position requires a high degree of independent decision making and problem solving skills. Regularly makes decisions involving the direction of major initiatives. Implements plans that affect the strategic direction of digital product lines. Informs the development and implementation of new processes.

  • Management level authority over the following areas:
    Technology direction for projects
    Staffing for tasks / projects
    Priority setting
    Organization structure
    Training requirements
    Compensation recommendations
    Promotions
    Budget considerations
    Design alternatives
    Standards establishment / enforcement


Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.

  • Masters in computer science preferred

  • 10 years leading engineering teams

  • Proven track record of developing high performing teams.

  • Experience in one or more of the following: Java/Android, Objective C or Swift, C#, or C

  • Experience in Front-end technology stack is a bonus.

  • Experience in TDD/BDD

  • Experience in implementing high performance, high availability, reliable and secured software, knowledge in scaling a system horizontally is preferred.

  • Experience with Insurance/Travel/Discount/Automotive/Membership products and operations highly desired.

  • Superior strategic, analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills, budgeting and forecasting.

  • Experience developing SaaS products, technologies and platforms.

  • Excellent communication skills, to both internal and external stakeholders, both oral and written.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, and senior executives.

  • Advanced ability to equally work on tactical deliverables along with participating and leading strategic initiatives.

  • Advanced ability to think strategically and transform strategy into actionable plans.

  • Clear understanding of UI/UX design and the basic principles of usability.

  • User-centric /customer-centric focused, embrace Agile XP practice, and possess a learning mindset.

  • Advanced ability in defining and leading implementation of new processes.

  • Advanced organization, planning, and problem resolution skills required.

The starting pay range for this position is:

$194,300.00 - $259,100.00

Additionally, for full time positions, you will be eligible to participate in our incentive program based upon the achievement of organization, team and personal performance.
